this is from a die hard padre fan, so take it for what it's worth. i told raymond at the beginning of the year, i would post as much as i could about my team, but kids and work get in the way sometimes. so, here's the 21 game report:
caught up, in another thread, asked me about our power numbers and why we haven't collected more HR's. this park is DEFINITELY a pitchers park. i'm not sure they thought it would be that way when they built it, but it is. anyone watching the game last night? notice the fog? well, it was some fog, but most of all, it is a thick marine layer that comes in on most summer nights in san diego. my guess is, that not only the dimensions of the park, but this weather is going to keep balls from getting out. the marine layer never made it to the old stadium. i don't have the numbers in front of me, but i've watched most of the home games, and i haven't seen any homers to right. just checked the numbers, klesko has one at home, BUT to left field. there just won't be that many.
player thoughts
giles - he is an unbelievable slump, but we are winning without him right now. when he does turn it on, watch out.
klesko - i think we should trade him, but who would want him. he vocally complained about the park. big whiner. SUCKS in left field.
nevin - 3 dingers and a 300 average. solid player. liability at 1st though. he has no clue about footing over there. it's comical at times.
burroughs - gonna be a solid player. i think people expect him to hit 20-25 HR's. he won't, at least not at this point in his career. he's a lot like Tony Gwynn, slaps the ball around. awesome third baseman as well.
green - this kid is special at SS. lotta range and a great arm. no power whatsoever at the plate, but if he can hit 280, i'd be happy. he bats 8th.
hernandez - what a steal this guy was. calls a great game, has an above average arm, but doesn't like to block the plate. he can hit the ball out, and will hit 270 to 280, i hope. kotsay is already forgotten
loretta - MVP on the team right now. one solid player. forget how we got him, maybe free agent, but man what a pickup a few years ago. he doesn't make mistakes.
payton/long - long hitting better right now. payton is a great centerfielder. there will be a lot of balls to track down in the big outfield. long is often inserted in left to spell klesko's woes out there.
i'll do a thread for the pitchers in a few days.
hope this helps.
