I know very little about Soccer but someone who does tipped me that Paraguay is a good bet at 40-1 to win the whole thing and an exceptional bet at 7-2 to win their division vs. Spain, Slovenia and South Africa.

Can anyone comment on this for me?

Thanks.

Historically only heavy favorites win the whole thing. At 40-1 I believe that is certainly great value theoretically, but I would be cautious betting anyone besides France, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Germany or maybe England.

7-2 to win the group seems like a very good bet. It is a risk because Spain is definitely the strongest team and the bracket appears to favor them to make their greatest World Cup run ever. Still, Paraguay seems to be a sure thing to qualify and all it takes is a good game against Spain to get that group win.

For what it's worth, in my opinion the better way to bet Paraguay may be to just bet them to win against Slovenia and South Africa. You may get weak odds but they have an excellent chance of winning both matches.

If Paraguay won the World Cup it would be the biggest upset in sports history.... personally think 40-1 is an awful price, wouldn't touch them at 200-1...

However, they do have a chance of winnng the group - again, don't like that price though.
As Nick said, Spain are hot faves to win the Group but they have an awful record at major tournaments and ususally blow at least one group match in which they start as heavy chalk.
If Paraguay can bt Spain, and that's a definite possibility - more on this later in another thread - then they could easily win this group as they will be targeting wins over Slovenia and a poor SA side.
I've played Slovenia to win the group instead at the very lucrative price of 11-1. They were very impressive in qualifying yet are still unfancied and have as good a chance of upsetting Spain as Paraguay do.
As I understand, Paraguay's inspirational captain, goalkeeper and free-kick expert Jose Luis Chilavert is suspended for the first 2 games. Defence is their specialty - they have 2 fine centrebacks - but a lot of the onus on attack is left to the Bayern Munich youngster Roque Santa Cruz

Hope this helps mate

Thanks. Also what do you think of the following bets?

France 9/2 - The best I've seen on them anywhere at OLY

Portugal 12/1 - I hear they have a strong team

Germany 16-1 at WSEX

I'm probably not going to play any outrights 'cos I don't think the value is there...

Out of the 3 - and I know this sounds weird when talking value - I like the France play the most.

Portugal are dark horses but Figo hasn't been in top form with Real this season and they have defensive weaknesses.

Germany have been hit horrendously by injuries and now only have 2 truly world class players in GK Oliver Kahn and attacking midfielder Michael Ballack. Wouldn't be shocked to see them knocked out in Group play.

France are deservedly faves being Cup holders and Euro 2000 champs. They have a strong albeit aging defence, two superb goalpoachers in Henry and Trezeguet, Vieira to anchor the midfield and the world's most dangerous player in Zidane, the man who wins big games. They have a tough path followign Group play but have the equipment to triumph.

Again, hope this helps..

There's more chance of Osama getting a Nobel Peace Prize than Paraguay winning the World Cup. I'm yet to recall a 'suprise' team winning the World Cup. Maybe Uruguay in the 1st one but I can't really comment on that cos I wasn't around. The more I delve into my research the more and more I am liking Italy. Best price I can find is 6/1. Also Vieri is widely available at 12/1 for the golden boot which should prove great value if Italy go aswell as should be expected.

Myron,

I know the odds make our mouths salivate, but I would strongly urge you to think this wager over.

Paraguay will not win the world cup, I am trying to see if there are odds as such where one is able to make selections on teams not winning the cup.

Cheers
