Nittany Lion Basketball Player Jamaal Tate To Take Leave of Absence For Health Reasons
Junior Remains on Penn State Roster
State College, Pa. ? December 11, 2002 ?Penn State Nittany Lion basketball player Jamaal Tate (Linden, N.J.) has decided to take a leave of absence from both practice and games due to continuing health problems. His status and condition will be evaluated again at a later date.
Tate, who has battled nagging injuries and chronic fatigue over the past two seasons, will not play or practice in the near future but remains on the Lions? roster. ?Right now, I do not feel comfortable with my health and I don?t feel that I am representing myself or my team as well as I know I can,? Tate said. ?Hopefully, some time off will allow me to regain my strength and I can resume my career at Penn State.?

?I feel very badly for Jamaal and understand his frustration at not being able to practice or play at the level he is accustomed to,? Penn State head coach Jerry Dunn said. ?This has been an on-going situation for Jamaal for the past couple seasons and I sincerely hope that his health improves and he can resume his playing career here at Penn State.?

Tate had started three games this season and is averaging 3.6 ppg and 2.2 rpg. The Nittany Lions will host Temple tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center.
