Winger puts off suitors until July

Malone will speak with Jackets once he's a free agent

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 3:35 AM

If the Blue Jackets want to acquire Pittsburgh Penguins left winger Ryan Malone, they'll have to wait for the start of free agency.

Malone told The Dispatch last night that he will explore free agency July 1 and is not willing to negotiate with the Blue Jackets or any other club before then.

The Blue Jackets and Penguins had preliminary discussions about a trade that would have sent Malone's negotiating rights to Columbus in exchange for a player or a draft pick at this weekend's NHL draft.

Minnesota and Vancouver were also said to be interested in a similar deal with Pittsburgh, but Malone nixed that possibility.

"I don't want any team I go to to give up a possible teammate," Malone said. "So we will wait till (July 1)."

Malone said he would consider signing with the Blue Jackets as a free agent but that he would listen to "some other teams, as well."

As many as 12 clubs have space under salary cap to pay Malone, as well as the need for his rugged, fearless style.

There might be something else at work in Malone's refusal to negotiate before July 1.

Malone, born and raised in Pittsburgh, is said to be miffed at the Penguins for showing so little interest in re-signing him after he played so well in the playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals, which Pittsburgh lost this month to Detroit.

The Penguins reportedly have made two offers to Malone, but both fell short of what's considered to be his market value -- $4 million to $5 million a season. The last thing he wants to do is help the Penguins by facilitating a trade for his rights.

The Blue Jackets desperately need top-six forwards, and Malone, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound winger, would fit in well with coach Ken Hitchcock's system.

Last season, Malone had a career-high 27 goals.

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson, who would not comment on Malone, joined the Jackets' scouting staff in Ottawa. They worked late into the evening, completing their draft list.

Anyone got any rumors rather than the ones from PGH PA?? They don't say much other these parts!!

Here in Leaf Nation I hear Kubina will be traded to San Jose, for what I don't know.
Maybe a bag of pucks and a six pack of Zima.

Also, McCabe is rumoured to wave his no trade clause and go back to the Island
along with #7 Pick for Islanders #5 Pick.
I don't think it'll happen.

Trade discussions will heat up this week leading up to the draft as teams eager to move up make their play.

Tampa Bay has received a number of calls in an effort to gauge whether or not first pick overall is available. It isn't, unless Jay Feaster and the Lightning's incoming ownership group are offered a package that is out of this world.

San Jose, Florida and the Carolina Hurricanes are considered to be among the most likely to make a significant trade.

Sharks captain Patrick Marleau is a name making the rounds this week along with his teammate Jonathan Cheechoo. The Marleau rumours always seem to surface, but sources say San Jose did have trade discussions last year with the Vancouver Canucks in a deal that was to include Canucks' forward Ryan Kesler.

Marleau is available.

Panthers' captain Olli Jokinen has indicated to Florida's general manager Jacques Martin that he would like a trade. The big centre will continue to lure tons of interest, although one team suggests the asking price is marked at two young NHL roster players and a first round draft pick.

Carolina's Jim Rutherford remains on the hunt for a defenseman, with Edmonton's Joni Pitkanen believed to be one of his targets. Names like Erik Cole, Justin Williams and Tuomo Ruutu are being tossed around as bait.

Whether it's a trade to better a teams' draft position, a player for player swap, or a blockbuster, the potential for all three scenarios remain very much in play.
