GAME NOTES: The Waves of Pepperdine, happy to be home after losing their
second straight game on Friday night to Oregon, welcome the Georgia Bulldogs
to the west coast for a non-conference affair this evening at Firestone
Fieldhouse. Pepperdine had been riding a two-game winning streak, following
victories over Long Beach State and USC a week ago, but then it was time to
hit the road, something that has been quite unkind to Pepperdine this year. On
Saturday night the Georgia Bulldogs registered their first official road win
of the season, defeating South Alabama in Mobile by a score of 79-70. The
victory was the third straight for Georgia, which began the 2001-02 campaign
with five consecutive wins. This game with the Waves marks the second on a
three-game trip for the Bulldogs, after they've spent a good portion of the
early season around home. This game marks just the second meeting between
these two schools on the hardwood, following the inaugural contest last year
at the Stegeman Center in Athens. In that contest the Bulldogs took a bite out
of the Waves by claiming a 71-62 victory.
Chris Daniels scored 21 points and grabbed 14 boards to lead the Georgia
Bulldogs to a 79-70 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in the opening game
of the Coors Classic on Saturday night in Mobile. Jarvis Hayes netted 18
points and Rashad Wright added 12 points in the win. The Bulldogs overcame 17
turnovers by shooting 55 percent from the floor and outrebounding South
Alabama, 40-26. The Jaguars, who rely heavily on long-range shooting,
connected on just 9-of-31 attempts from behind the arc. Ezra Williams
currently leads this team in scoring through nine contests, hitting for an
average of 19 points a game. Williams, who also leads the team in rebounding
by a fraction of a board at 7.3 rpg, is a bit of an anomaly in college
basketball, or basketball in general for that matter. You'll be hard-pressed
to find a player leading his team in rebounding who us attempting more than
half of his field goal attempts from behind the three-point line. At the
moment Williams is converting 40.8 percent of his shots from the perimeter
(31-of-76), but is only shooting 41.9 percent from the floor overall.
Although, if it were not for him this team would be almost devoid of any long
range shooting ability as Jonas Hayes is the only other player on the team to
have hit as many as 10 long balls so far.
On Friday night the Waves ran into a tough Oregon Ducks squad on the road and
fell by 24 points in an 88-64 decision. Jimmy Miggins led the Waves with 17
points, Craig Lewis chipped in with 12 and Gary Colbert came off the bench to
add 11 points in the losing effort as well. Miggins and Colbert also combined
to register seven of the team's nine assists on the night also. The Waves
tried desperately to get back into the game in the second half, but shot only
2-of-10, as they did in the first period, from behind the three-point line.
For the second straight game, poor field goal shooting hurt Pepperdine, as the
Waves made only 31.7 percent of their field goal attempts (20-of-63). In the
last two games, Pepperdine has made only 37-of-124 shots from the floor, a
poor 29.8 percent. Rebounding has been a problem for the Waves all season,
and
that situation was magnified tonight, as Oregon won the battle of the boards
by a commanding 54-28 margin. The Ducks also grabbed 18 offensive rebounds.
Miggins has been a dynamo so far this season for the Waves, pulling down a
team-high 7.6 rebounds a contest while leading the squad in scoring as well at
16.6 ppg. As eluded to earlier, the Waves have been washed over on the glass
by the competition this season and are being beaten on the boards by 11 caroms
The Bulldogs were given a bit of a scare on Saturday against the Panthers,
which makes this game with the Waves even more of a challenge. However,
Pepperdine may have already had its day in the sun, twice for that matter
after beating both USC and UCLA this season. The game will remain close,
perhaps because of a little jet lag on behalf of Georgia, but Williams should
have enough juice to get them over the hump.
