Artest wary of Wizards

The word ?warier? is an adjective of the word ?wary?. Thus, a person who is ?warier? is someone who is more wary, or more cautious.

Ron Artest is not someone you?d think of when it comes to being wary or cautious. Just the opposite, in fact.

Yet, the fiery basketball star has taken on the nickname TruWarier, which is obviously his interpretive misspelling of the expression True Warrior. He?s also using the nickname for his recording label.

Artest was not the least bit wary when he shaved TruWarier into the back of his head last week.

Unfortunately, after his bone-headed ad made the highlights on national TV, the powers that be in the NBA decided that Artest must remove the shaving.

Why? Because it was in violation of a league rule that says players are not allowed to wear logos or promotional material on any part of their bodies.

Poor Ron takes another one from the man.

Artest and the rest of his basketball crew will hosting the Washington Wizards at the Conseco Fieldhouse on Thursday night in the first game of NBA doubleheader on TNT (8 p.m. ET).

The Pacers are off to a solid start this season having gone 10-6 straight up (8-8 against the spread) in their first 16 games. Prior to Tuesday, they were second in the NBA Central behind Detroit.

Jermaine O?Neal leads the team in scoring draining nearly 22 points per game. He?s also averaging more than 10 rebounds.

Artest, meanwhile, is second on the team in scoring with just under 20 ppg. He?s also averaging more than five boards and a team-leading 2.5 steals.

However, the Pacers have been limping of late. On Sunday in Seattle, PG Jamaal Tinsley and PF Austin Croshere, both starters, did not play in a 107-102 loss.

For Tinsley, it was the second straight game he missed due to a sore groin. Croshere, meanwhile, was out as a result of an abdominal strain he suffered Friday night against the Blazers.

Starting in place of Tinsley, who also missed Tuesday?s game against Dallas, has been rookie guard Sarunas Jasikevicius. The 6-foot-4 Lithuanian is netting nearly 10 ppg.

To make matters worse for the Pacers, O?Neal is reportedly experiencing stomach problems and visited a doctor on Tuesday, and F Jonathan Bender is out with a sore left knee.

After a strong start, the Wizards have been in a tailspin having gone 3-7 in their last 10.

Prior to Tuesday, the Wizards had a mediocre record of 7-8 SU (5-10 ATS). Yet, they still sat in second in the weak Southeast, 1 ? games behind the Heat.

Washington hasn?t had any trouble scoring logging nearly 99 ppg (6th overall), but they?ve been giving up more than 97 ppg. Defense has been noted by players as a team weakness.

Gilbert Arenas leads the team in scoring with more than 27 ppg (4th overall). The 6-foot-4 point guard is also averaging nearly six assists.

F Antawn Jamison is second in scoring with a little less than 21 ppg, and he has been the big man at the boards averaging more than 11 rpg (6th in the league).

One injury of note on the Wizards: PG Antonio Daniels suffered a left knee sprain in early November. Daniels has been getting playing time off the bench but he has been fairly non-productive with only 16 points in his last seven games.

The second game of the TNT doubleheader on Thursday will feature a couple of last place teams: Houston at Sacramento (10:30 p.m. ET).

With leading scorer Tracy McGrady having missed eight games due to back problems, the Rockets were 4-12 (8-8 ATS) in their first 16 games and sitting snugly in the basement of the Southwest.

On Saturday, in his second game back after having missed five straight, McGrady played 38 minutes but could only manage 12 points in a 90-75 loss to Memphis.

Yao Ming is carrying most of the offensive load for the Rockets scoring almost 20 ppg. Against the Grizzlies he netted 29.

The Rockets are scoring an average of just 85.3 ppg, second-fewest in the league. Their inability to score has resulted in nine of their first 17 games dipping below the posted total.

At 7-10, the Kings have a marginally better record than the Rockets, but still sit in last in the Pacific. Heading into Tuesday?s game against the Cavs, the Kings had lost three-straight.

Unlike the Rockets, Sacramento is not having trouble scoring averaging 98.1 ppg, but they?re giving up 98.3 ppg.
