Wilma throws in a wrinkle

First it was Katrina, then it was Rita, now it?s Wilma.

Mother Nature is sending another one of her deadly daughters towards the American Southeast and wreaking havoc on the football schedule.

The latest scheduling casualty is the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins. The game was scheduled for Sunday but has been moved up to Friday (7 p.m. ET) in response to the Wilma?s impending arrival to the Florida shores.

Of course, the mere change in the NFL schedule is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and we?re certainly hoping Wilma settles down and spares the residents of Florida another catastrophe.

Nevertheless, if you?re thinking of throwing some money down on this game, the change could have an effect on which side you decide to take.

First and foremost, the change means two less days of rest and recovery for both teams. In terms of injuries, this will arguably have a bigger impact on the Dolphins who could be without a couple of key components on defense.

Twelve-time Pro Bowl linebacker Junior Seau missed last week?s game in Tampa Bay due to a calf injury. He was listed as questionable for this week, but with less time to recover, his status could worsen.

The same thing could happen to three-time Pro Bowler Jason Taylor, who injured his foot early in Sunday?s 27-13 loss to the Bucs. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound defensive end missed practice on Wednesday and was listed as questionable for Sunday?s game.

Head coach Nick Saban was reported as saying that Taylor might be able to practice on Friday. But with the game moved up to Friday, it?s increasingly likely Taylor could see his 87-game streak of starts come to an end.

The younger Taylor would likely be a bigger loss for the Dolphins. The 31-year-old has 26 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown in the first five games.

Thirty-six-year-old Seau, who battled injuries and only appeared in eight games last year, has 28 tackles and one sack in four games so far.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, have a couple of starters who are questionable, namely CB Dexter McCleon (groin) and WR Samie Parker (knee). However, neither player is as critical to his team as Seau and Taylor are to the Fish.

That said, the Chiefs, who knocked off the Redskins 28-21 at Arrowhead last week, will have to travel halfway across the country to get to Miami and will have less time to acclimatize. The Dolphins, on the other hand, played just down the road in Tampa last week.

We currently have the Dolphins, who are 2-3 both straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS), listed as 2-point home favorites vs. the Chiefs, who are 3-2 SU and ATS this season.

The total for the game has been set at 42. Together, both teams are 5-5 on the OVER/UNDER this season.

Green Bay at Minnesota

Yes, the Vikings are in turmoil, and yes, they?ve looked awful their past two games.

Nevertheless, this team still has plenty of talent. Case in point: Despite losing WR Randy Moss in the offseason, the Vikings were predicted by many pundits to win the NFC North this year.

At 1-4 SU (1-4 ATS), the chances of this scandal-plagued team turning things around and winning the division seem remote.

But that doesn?t mean they can?t beat division rival Green Bay (1-4 SU, 3-2 ATS), who only got their first win of the year two weeks ago against the lowly Saints at Lambeau.

While quarterback Brett Favre is clearly not the quarterback he once was, he certainly doesn?t have a lot of tools to work with either.

The Vikings host the Packers at the Metrodome this Sunday (1 p.m. ET, FOX). We currently have Minnesota listed as a 1.5-point home dog.

The Vikings are coming off a 28-3 humiliation in Chicago last week as 3-point underdogs. Granted, the Vikes were pathetic, but the team arguably has extra motivation to turn things around this week.

Sure coach Mike Tice is on the firing line, but the players probably don?t care much about that. His days are numbered in Minnesota.

What?s more important is that the team?s owner has threatened to remove players who were involved in the recent sex boat scandal.

Thus, it?s likely players will be extra motivated to play well this week in order to keep their jobs or perhaps showcase their talents to another team.

Good luck with your bets!
