Some cappers find the four majors the hardest to cap; no question from my record that the majors (plus The Players) are the backbone of my wagering career. The problem is, the events with my best success are U.S. Open, The Players, Open Championship, and The Masters, in that order, but with an almost total lack of success in the P.G.A. ( I'm still bummed about the Dustin Johnson's @ 40/1 penalty at Whistling Straits, even though I thought the decision was obviously correct). So, I never really get a great vibe about my chances come Glory's Last Shot.

Outrights:

Dustin Johnson(28/1) e.w.
Padraig Harrington(50/1) e.w.
- - Dustin ticks the most boxes if just some 10 to 20 mph ocean breezes prevail for the week. If the ocean breezes are up, Padraig ticks more boxes than almost anyone.

Steve Stricker(40/1) e.w.
Jason Dufner(25/1) e.w.
- - I avoid Stricker in majors, but this sort of feels like the right time and place for a sentimental run, if I leave specifics of Kiawah as the venue out of the equation. And I haven't had any of Dufner in the majors this year, but the P.G.A. seems the right one if I similarly don't focus on the specifics of the venue.

Carl Pettersen(110/1) e.w.
Geoff Ogilvy(100/1) e.w.
Thorbjorn Olesen(150/1) e.w.
- - Petterssen fashioning the best season of his career IMO, or one event away from doing so, so this spot definitely has appeal. This Ogilvyaholic has seen signs of trending to something better all season, and the generous driving opportunities and a big ocassion is right up his street. Olesen feels too soon to not be a bridge too far, but I've many times posted my philosophy that it's better to be too early than too late on these things.

John Daly(150/1) e.w. 1st Round Leader
- - What I've been seeing is some really solid driving, but every other facet of his game and his demeanor has the look of someone far to fragile to whoop his way to this title. First round leader, on the other hand, seems very doable.

I will certainly be slipping in at least one more, in running if nothing else. I'll see what comes of not taking a Win Only play on Tiger as insurance against.

Round 1 play (4pts):

Hunter Mahan to beat Phil Mickelson +100 @ Paddy Power
Definitely value at plus-odds to oppose Mickelson with a player like Mahan. Mickelson's last six starts read: wd, 65th (U.S. Open), mc, 16th, mc (British Open) and 43rd - he is simply not playing well enough to compete this week and one of the most surprising stats is that he hasn't broken 70 in the opening round since March. Over the whole of this season, he averages 71.89 in the first round - that is over one and a quarter shots more than Mahan, who will be a good shout to earn his fourth top-20 finish in this event in the last six years.

[unofficial rd1 system plays: Lynn tb Bae +120; Garcia tb Els +100; Kaymer tb Colsaerts +100]

Oost -113 over Z Johnson Nice recent form for Oost. He trended upwardly like this leading into his first major win. He is a force when game is on. ZJ has length concerns. I like my chances here....

Round 2 play (4pts):

Geoff Ogilvy to beat Carl Pettersson -105 @ Bet365
Two angles for this. The first is that Pettersson is the 1st round leader in a Major Championship, having never previously won a Major. He has shown that he can cope with the pressure of leading - in two of the three occasions that he has been 1st round leader since 2011, he has finished every round in the top-5, so he has been consistent. The other occasion, though (2011 Northern Trust Open), he then shot 78-70-71 to finish 55th. He has coped with leading in the past (the last two occasions that he has led after rd1, he has won on to win the event), but if he doesn't he could have a big score today. The other angle is Geoff Ogilvy's confidence in his game. He has been talking widely about how well he is playing (after struggling for much of the season) and that resulted in a top-10 finish in the British Open, a 24th place finish last week on a course on which he has never had a top-20 finish (eight attempts) and his best opening score in a Major yesterday. He is a Major Champion and I'd expect him to still be in contention after today's round.

[unofficial rd2 system plays: Woods tb McIlroy -125; Woods tb Bradley -138; Molinari tb Stanley -180; Woods tb Oosthuizen -138; Scott tb Schwartzel -120; De Jonge tb Fernandez-Castano -120; Scott tb Hansen -135; Singh V tb Yang -130]

ODDS and ENDS:

(1) I have NEVER, NEVER, NEVER seen so many putts rolled in from substantial distances (10 feet, 20 feet, 40 feet, etc.) by an entire field during a single round of golf, at any level, much less one of the four major championships. Guys outside the top 100 after the first round were still able to make some 20 footers and the like. If they had the stat for total distance of putts holed for each player, it would prove my observation correct for all eternity. The greens are obviously not the last line of defense here, unlike Augusta, where the greens are the first line and the last line of defense. The ocean breezes are the defense at Kiawah. In some wind, and as the pressure builds, it has to get tougher, but there are going to be at least a few players in this championship who will be able to stay in the zone and keep making a ridiculous number of putts. I have NEVER seen anything like it.

(2) The comments I heard from Rory on Wednesday about the paspalum grass proved absolutely correct:

"Q. There's been a lot of talk about the paspalum greens. I wonder if you could tell us at what stage in your life you first heard that word, if you can spell it for us, and your general thoughts.
RORY McILROY: P‑a‑s‑p‑a‑l‑u‑m, and the Bear's Club actually have paspalum. We practice on paspalum all the time; me, Luke, Keegan, Dustin. It's something we are quite used to and something I was talking to Luke about yesterday, something that the guys that are members of the Bear's Club might have an advantage because we are used to how it reacts and we practice on that stuff on our off‑weeks, so it's actually quite nice . . . It's very spinny. When you see guys chipping off of greens and hitting wedge shots, it bites a lot. Even as I said earlier, when the greens are firm, just this certain type of grass, it just really grabs the ball. So you can be aggressive with your chip shots and definitely aggressive with your wedge shots, too."

Chip shots and pitches that looked very precarious, like over bunkers to downslopes running away, and off steep downslopes and back across swales to get to the green, just routinely checked to a stop when properly struck. There will not be a lot of putting from off the greens this week.

On Wednesday I also heard another commentator state that paspalum grass is not really that uncommon, and most of these world class players will have had a fair amount of exposure to it.

(3) I went looking for outright plays to add to my roster, but nothing stood out, and it felt like I would have been forcing a play rather than jumping on a play. I guess Justin Rose had as much appeal as any, but the 20/1 on offer had no such appeal. Maybe Saturday.

Friday:

Harrington(+136) over Mickelson/Love
Rose(+108) over Watney/Lawrie
Scott(+108) over Mahan/Garcia
Ogilvy(+124) over Dufner/Casey
Pettersson(+108) over Day/Gainey
