PGA Golf Tour features brand new event

The dog days of summer mean a steady supply of MLB Baseball as well as a ton of PGA Golf for sports bettors.

This week, before the high-profile WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the final major of the year, the US PGA Championship, comes a new event on the PGA Tour, the Greenbrier Classic at the Old White Course at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Golf betting fans will find a wide-open field this week, as many of the world?s top golfers skip the Greenbrier Classic before what are essentially the last two big tournaments of the year and the FedExCup playoffs.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods and No. 2 Phil Mickelson will both pass on the event.

The highest ranked player competing this week will be World No. 5 Jim Furyk, who also happens to be the favorite in PGA Golf Odds at betED.com, at +1200 to win the Greenbrier.

World No. 24 Matt Kuchar is next at +1800, followed by Nick Watney, ranked 32nd, at +2000.

In all, the field includes just two of the top 25 players in the world and seven of the top 25 on the FedEx Cup points list, but there are five PGA Tour winners from this season competing, including Furyk, who will be looking for his third victory of 2010.

The Golf Channel will air all four rounds from 3-6 pm ET.

I am picking 3 of the same guys I had last week as they each came very close to finishing in the money. Until De Jonge blew up on 15 on Sunday, I still thought he might actually win it.
I am throwing in Goydos due to his high odds.

Kuchar 15-1 win, 7 1/2 place, 3 1/2 show

De Jonge 40-1 win, 20-1 place, 10-1 show

Hoffman 40-1 win, 20-1 place, 10-1 show

Goydos 80-1 win, 40-1 place, 20-1 show

As always, best of luck to all of you!

Round 1 play (2pts):

Kenny Perry to beat Ben Crane +100 @ 5Dimes
Any player that had missed just one cut on the PGA Tour in the last 23 months is worth backing in matchups. Perry has been playing well, but struggling on the greens ever since his putter broke on the putting green just before he teed off in the opening event of the year. It has meant that he has made a lot of cuts, but not really challenged for titles. However, he felt much happier with the Bobby Grace putter that he used over the weekend in his last PGA Tour event - he shot 65-69 when using it - and that augurs well for his pledge this week: for every birdie that he makes, he will donate $2,000 to the families of the West Virginia mining disaster in April. That will ensure that he is both fully motivated for this event and receives a great deal of crowd support. It has been over three months since Crane shot a lower 1st round score than Perry and under these circumstances, a lot of people will be hoping that he will need to shoot a very low score tomorrow to end that run.

Small bet on Tricky Ricky Barnes +100 over JB Holmes

Barnes has done well on shot maker courses like Riviera and Harbour Town.

Round 2 play (4pts):

Jeff Overton to beat Brendon De Jonge -140 @ Carib
With four top-3 finishes in the last 14 weeks, there is no-one else in such form as Overton in this field. De Jonge has been playing well, but nowhere near Overton's level and that was also clear yesterday when De Jonge played in the par-3s well, but was average from tee-to-green, while Overton was solid throughout and would have held the overnight lead, but for a bogey on the last hole. Overton will be comfortable in his current top-3 position, De Jonge not: he has started the 2nd round in the top-10 three times since the start of last season and shot 75-75-73 in the following round. His recent top-20 finishes have all been from slow starts.
