PGATOUR.COM Launches First Android App for PGA TOUR
Free App Offers Live Scoring, Video Highlights for Android Enabled Smart Phones

PGATOUR.COM, the official website of the PGA TOUR, announced today the launch of the PGA TOUR app for the Android Market. The app, available Wednesday, Mar. 2, provides live scoring, video highlights and instant updates for PGA TOUR events throughout the 2011 season and beyond. The PGA TOUR app, sponsored by NIKE Golf, will be available for The Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, FL and will offer fans an additional way to access schedules, tee times, course information, and detailed player scorecards. This marks the first Android app for the TOUR.

Features of the app include:
? Live Scoring: Fans can view the live leaderboard and scorecards as well as access player and course information for every PGA TOUR tournament.
? Customizable Leaderboard: With enhanced search functionality, fans can easily track their favorite player?s progress.
? Breaking News Highlights: The News feature provides frequent updates to storylines and breaking news.
? Video Highlights: Within the app, fans can view video highlights from all tournaments as well as the ?PGA TOUR Today? video franchise.
? Course Features: The course section provides detailed hole and course imagery for most of the PGA TOUR tournament courses.

In addition, The Honda Classic is the first event that the PGA TOUR mobile device policy will be implemented. With the new policy, fans will be able to carry mobile devices and use them in select areas on the golf course.

?Given the rapid growth of Android and the new policy allowing fans at TOUR events to carry mobile devices, we feel now is the perfect time to launch a PGA TOUR app for Android smart phones,? said Alex Vargas, Senior Director of Business Operations for PGATOUR.COM. ?Our flagship PGA TOUR app, now available in both the Android market and App store, provides fans with instant access to TOUR video highlights, live scoring and unique play-by-play coverage on the most prominent web-enabled mobile devices.?

"We are excited to add the Android app to our mobile platform," said David Plant, Senior Manager of Product Marketing and Development for PGA TOUR. "Our goal is to provide golf fans with access to PGA TOUR coverage wherever they are, and with the growth of the Android user base, it was the logical next step in our mobile strategy."

The Android app is the latest addition to the rapidly growing PGA TOUR mobile portfolio. The PGA TOUR App will be available March 2 for free in the Android market or at http://www.android.com/market.

"Allow this application to access:

"Phone Calls
Read phone state and identity"

Why?

"Storage

Modify/delete SD card contents"

Why?

Would appreciate it if they explained further why they need my personal telephone info and the ability to - apparently - get a record of my phone calls, and, what is the extent of modifying/deleting data on my SD card.

I pass.

I can access pgatour.com on the phone, without letting them monitor my personal /phone calling info.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, they are way out of line as far as intrusiveness.
But this is increasingly common - google recent articles on the intrusive data mining that "free" apps are doing on one's phone.
