Phoenix started the year shooting very low numbers per game. 17 times against L.A and 16 against Edmonton.
Calgary allowed and average of 23.5. and turek is hot.
Phoenix is allowing way to much shots and not abble to establish itself being 2 for 14

Considering what Turek has accomplished so far this season -- it's the first time the Flames have opened a season with two straight shutouts and the first time in eight years the team has started with two wins -- Young didn't have much to do in yesterday's practice. He'd like to have that same philosophy after tonight's game, as the Flames will try to stretch that shutout streak to three games when they face the Phoenix Coyotes.

Pheonix:
We were actually in the game until we started taking dumb penalites. That killed us last year and we started that same trend again this year. Look, we're a young team and we can't afford to
shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties, blown coverages orby getting outworked." Phoenix has allowed 14 power plays inthe first two games. "I told our team at the start of the year I
wanted to limit our penalties to four, but I guess I forgot tomention four per game not per period," coach Bob Francis said.
Flames coach Greg Gilbert said. "It's a pretty large accomplishment. Roman
played his game tonight, he moved the puck well and helped the defensemen out at times. We know he's going to be good for us."

I LIKE calgary and the under.

i agree although i read today that the phoenix coach completely lambasted his players after the edmonton debacle in which they were outshot 41-16. that worries me a little in that you have one team playing well with 2 shutouts so far and another one who has been outshot like 70 something to 33 or so. like you guys said, it looks too easy. i'll be interested to see how phoenix comes out in the 1st.

Turek has been phenomenal and PK has been 100% for CAL. Can they do that 3 games in a row??? I am passing on everything tonight except a small 1st half play on the Rams -7.5

saw that too, froggy, but how many are still around on those phoenix teams that went 10-1-4? my guess is not a lot. it is still very early but from what i have seen i think cal is worthy of a small play perhaps....

Francis miffed at Coyotes' stumbling start

Bob McManaman
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 8, 2001

CALGARY, Alberta - Well, that was quick. Two games into the season, and Coyotes coach Bobby Francis already has blown a gasket.

The third-year coach went off on his team after its embarrassing 6-2 loss Saturday night to the Edmonton Oilers, criticizing some players for lackluster efforts and even questioning others about their willingness and ability to lead.

The more he said, the madder he got, and the more you have to wonder if he truly believes management has assembled the right combination of players to reach the playoffs.

"You can camouflage some issues for only so long," Francis said. "Eventually, you have to address it.

"You start with video. You start with practice. You start with issues you have to address and you correct them. You find people who are willing to do the corrections and exercise the assignments you ask of them. You weed out the people who care and don't care and you weed out the people who can play and can't play."

That sounds like an awfully big laundry list to carry out in time for tonight's game at the Pengrowth Saddledome against the 2-0 Calgary Flames. But expect some type of change, regardless. If it were up to Francis, he'd bench a handful of players and send a couple of others packing.

Apparently, it isn't just the collection of young players that has drawn his wrath. He's also displeased with some of his veterans, though he wouldn't name names.

"Some of these guys are here for a reason and we felt we had the right people that can lead this crew in the right direction, but everybody has to assume some responsibility," Francis said. "I have to. The leaders have to. If you play in this league, you're accountable and you better get that through your head."

Three immediate areas of concern are penalties, cutting down the opponent's scoring chances and being more effective at reading the rush.

In two games, the Coyotes have put their opponents on the power play 14 times, including four times each in the first period alone. They've been out-shot by such a lopsided margin (74-33), they might as well tie a blindfold around goalie Sean Burke and give him a cigarette.

"Sean held us in for as long as he could," Francis said, "but our penalties disrupted the way the game was played. We have to take responsibility for that. One of the goals coming into the season was to limit penalties to four. I guess I forgot to tell them I meant four a game, not four in the first period.

"We've got a lot of work to do and it's going to be repetition, repetition, repetition. If we want to do read-the-rush drills and down-low drills, we'll be doing that five hours a day until we get it right. That's the process we're in right now."
