I know several of you out there are from the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, so I was hoping to get some feedback. I've decided I'm leaving Wall St at the end of the year and my girlfriend is dying to get a house together in Scottsdale. I always planned on going back to LA, but she's making sick money in Phoenix (an intelligent ASU grad, who knew?) and the golf factor are starting to sway me. When I look at what I can buy out there on a golf course it makes me sick compared to what I pay in Manhattan.

Here is my problem: She is dead-set on living in Gainey Ranch, but there is no way in hell I want to join a resort course. Troon North has a 3 year wait list and Greyhawk is public. Desert Mountin is outrageous and Desert Forest is too damn far away.

Does anyone have any other for country clubs I should look at? Anyone played Firerock or Anthem? Also, is the TPC strictly public or do they sell memberships also?

My girlfriend is not a golfer (yet) so she is of no help. The realtors that I have spoken to all have their own agenda. Right now I'm going off of Golf Digest's Top Courses in Az list, but I would love some local feedback. Or at least someone who could point me to an online resource that can help me.

Thanks, fellas.

Plenty of good golf courses in NZ; talk your fine lady into moving here as I could desperately do with some intensive work on my swing

Ar182 - Thanks for the info. I actually looked at DC Ranch, but they want $120k to join. Troon North has two courses and is only $75k to join. Can't justify DC Ranch. Since we're both under 30, we're trying to find a club that has a "junior" membership program that defers a lot of the initiation fee until you're 40. I know a lot courses have that, just have to find the right one. I'll look into McDowell, I haven't heard of that one before. As for restaurants, have you tried Vincent Guerihaulth on Camelback? I took my girlfriend there not long ago and it was damn good. Thanks for the tips, I will look into it -- and I will definitely drop you an email when I narrow down my choices.

Anders - NZ is definitely on my short list of places to visit. We may actually do Austrailia/NZ when I get the sack to tie the knot. But I'm not sure I can go to a place where I can golf all day and she can lay on nice beaches. I'll never want to leave! Before I know I'll be talking with an accent, watching football with no pads or helmuts and seeing my toilet flush in the opposite direction!! Though I do owe you a few lessons for all those rugby winners...
