Yes Miss America 1971 passed away the other day.. yes I dated her... and so did the other 7,000 male students at North Texas ...it became a joke with everybody ... because we were in school the same time and you mentioned North Texas it was assumed you dated her.. but North Texas in 1969-70 had over 16,000 students and about 9,000 were females.. plus if you add the other Texas Womans Univ in Denton with its 5,000 co eds it was about a 3-1 or 4-1 girl to boy ratio..and people to this day still ask me " why did you go to North Texas St.." so I will admit today for the 1st time it was the girl to guy ratio and North Texas was considered a " party school " . out of state tuition was $250 a semester and another $250 for room and board..my father wanted to me to go to a catholic college, his alma mater Manhattan College..and I could live with my aunt and uncle on 251st Street in the Bronx only 12 blocks from Manhattan College...:mj07: are you kidding me dad...I wanted to go so far away and a county cop in the summer just graduated from North Texas and told me about the girls,parties and teachers programs I wanted to be a PE major and they had a good program .. My father agreed with me sending me to Texas...but I had to join ROTC,double major with history and PE and get an all level degree K-12{ elementary certification} I agreed to everything because there was no way I was going to Manhattan and live with my mothers sister in the Bronx..
so how does Phyllis get into this.. when I write my memoirs someday ,Phyllis has a whole chapter in the book
I got about 20 texts from all my north texas buddies in the last 2 days ..

One of these stories was told her many years ago ..I have been banned for telling it in front of her
But here goes
It was the year she had won the Miss America pageant... she came back to North Texas homecoming football game to crown the queen . My roommate I were selling the football programs for the wrestling team.. a percentage of the profits went to the wrestling team not sure who we were playing think Louisville or Tulsa.. it started to rain so my roommate and I stopped selling and sat on the track hiding under the railing tying to keep dry.. a convertible limo drove on the track and stopped right in front of us .. Out came Phyllis for the halftime ceremony.. she was maybe 4 feet from us.. she had on a one piece suit that was very tight clinging to her body.. we were saying what a " body" not realizing she won the swimsuit part of the pageant...we watched her ass cling to the dress as her cheeks moved up and down.. my roomie and I watched this and looked at each other with our mouths wide open ..she walked maybe 20 yds and we knew why she won Miss america...now we both had some THC in out system so that could of magnified what we were looking at.. but it was " nirvana" heaven.. the other day I received a text from Danny my roommate.. he said " box do you remember the halftime with Phyllis " I sent him back a text said " its a memory I could never forget"
Ironically Phyllis crowned Shirly Cothram that day because 2 years later she became Miss America { have about 3 or 4 Shirly Cothram stories }

a few years later I was coaching and teaching in NY.. a sports columnist who covered my teams did an article about me I told him I went to North Texas the year after Joe Greene but went to school with Phyllis George .. He was known to exaggerate his sport column The next day the article comes out and in it he says " box dated Phyllis while at North Texas" my whole school and fellow coaches and friends laughed . My wife reads it and says " why would you tell him that OMG I never said that.. so for years had to live with that.. so after being kidded about it for many years I went on the offensive.. said yes it came down to her and my wife .. my wife was a Blazertte dancer for the Paris High School marching band ...she had on that skimpy outfit with her white cowboy hat...Phyllis never wore a cowboy hat..
My wife sends the article to some of my North Texas boys and they go nuts .. to this day they still believe I told the reporter even the other day 2 texts said " be careful remember box dated her".
She did a pretty good job with the NFL as an announcer but she could only play one song on her talent it was " rain drops falling on my head" she played that as her talent on the Miss america show ..one song .. she went on the johhny Carson show and played it .. the year after she won she was outside the Union on campus.. there was a piano and she played Rain drops" people were yelling play another song we think that was the only song she knew but It didn't matter.. no one had better cheeks there in in America...
