pitcher vs batter

Is it better for the pitcher to be familiar with the batters or vise versa. I ask because of the white sox-toronto game.

the pitcher has the advantage if the batter hasn't faced him before.

so to the cws-to game would the toronto batters be familier enough with wells to have the advantage because he was their teammate or would he have the advantage be he knows them?
