A Pittsburgh police officer accidentally shot his partner in the foot Friday in Hazelwood.

The officer was trying to shoot a dog that was attacking his partner.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. on Tipton Street, according to Public Safety spokeswoman Emily Schaffer.

Two plainclothes detectives were conducting a drug investigation when the dog attacked one of the detectives, Schaffer said.

The officer's partner fired at the dog. The shot struck the dog as well as the officer's foot.

Unlike the hobbled patrolman, the dog ran off on all fours but was later found and taken to the vet, Schaffer said.

The officer, who did howl but was unable to run off, hopped around until he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian where he was treated and released.

Authorities, fearing uncontrollable laughter by the press readership, did not identify the officers.

Later, a distraught man who said the dog is a family pet became aggressive with camera operators from several TV stations who were there covering the shooting, at one point slapping a cell phone from the hand of WTAE reporter Bob Hazen.

Police were called to deal with the altercation but were not allowed to use their guns out of fear they would shoot each other.
