And betED.com, which has one of the biggest selections of Entertainment Prop Bets on the internet, has betting odds for the event, which will be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort (9 pm ET, NBC).

Of the 84 women competing for the title, Miss Australia is the favorite at +400 in betED.com?s Miss Universe Prop Betting Odds, followed by Miss Mexico and Miss Dominican Republic, both at +450.

Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, is at +900 odds while Miss Canada, Mariana Valente, is at +3500.

The defending Miss Universe is Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela.

The contestants compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and the interview.

There are 15 semifinalists who take part in the swimsuit competition. Ten move on to the evening gown competition, with half eventually being eliminated. The final five compete in the "final question". At the end of competition the runners-up are announced and the winner crowned by the outgoing queen.

The first pageant was held in Long Beach, California in 1952 and was won by Armi Kuusela from Finland, who gave up her title to get married to a Filipino tycoon, Virgilio Hilario, shortly before her year was complete.

The contest was founded by California clothing company Pacific Mills. The pageant became part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf and Western Industries, before being acquired by Donald Trump in 1996.

The Miss Universe Organization, a New York-based partnership between Trump and NBC, has run the contest since June 20, 2002. The Organization also produces the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA contests.

The U.S. holds the record with seven Miss Universe winners, followed by Venezuela and Puerto Rico with five.
