I have some advice for casino BJ, since I have played many many hundreds of hours I think I can help a bit. First, check out
www.thewizardofodds.com website, it has the charts that people call basic strategy on it. Memorize the chart for the game you will be playing ( 6 deck shoe, 2 deck, single deck ) and NEVER DEVIATE from it.
There are three types of BJ player, IMO. The first is your basic "hunch/guess/'seat-of-the-pants'" type that tries to guess what the next card is to determine their hit/stick/double/split decisions and how much to bet. They may look at the last few cards and think that a big card is "due" or vice versa. THEY HAVE ZERO CHANCE!! This makes up >99% of all BJ players ( and the vig is >6% for this type of player ).
The second category, which I fall into, are what are called "basic strat" players in that we go by the book and make the decision that computer simulations have deemed the mathematically optimum way to play each hand without counting cards. It takes hours of practice to learn the charts and play this way but it cuts the house edge to less than 1% in most cases ( depending on the house rules and # decks ). Playing this way drastically cuts your losses and gives you a shot at an occasional winning trip, and a good chance at some winnings sessions. You can play the same amount each time or come up with a progressive scheme ( though these are fun they have little bearing on your overall winnings unless it is a complete "let-it-ride" which is suicide ).
The third category are card counters. they are VERY RARE, and many who say they count don't really do it well enough to win anyway. It sapped any fun out of the game, the one time I tried it, so I am content to just limit my losses and have some fun for my $ with basic strat. Good counters can get a 1-2% advantage on the house. But it is hard work and you need to know how to produce cover to keep from getting barred, etc. A key to most cc is the spread ( min to max ) in betting amounts based on the count, plus some varied strategy depending on the complexity of the cc method you employ. I wouldn't consider , as it takes a lot of hard work to become mediocre at it. CC play basic strat most of the time, so you must be a good basic strat player to consider the next step up!
The real important thing is MONEY MANAGEMENT. It accounts for far more of the casino's profits than just the VIG at the games. This is a HUGE subject, but setting realistic win goals and loss limits to govern sessions is even more important than basic strat. Being disciplined is the hardest part. MM can't allow you to beat the vig, but it will limit the losses and risks of going bust too quickly.
That website is a good casino reference. Have fun and think of it as entertainment you are paying for. Thinking you will win will dissapoint you and piss you off, it isn't realistic for most of us! So get up when you hit a loss limit and do something else for a while.
