There IS basketball today! The 3-3 Villanova Wildcats take on the 4-1 Maryland Terrapins at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ (Neutral Court). Tip is 1:00 pm eastern on ESPN. Maryland is -6/138.5.
The Terrapins are 4-1 coming in off of a 108-37 win over Canisius where they were up 50-6 sometime in the first half. Their other wins were all by over 30 points vs. not stellar competition. Their loss was by 4 vs. #15 Marquette. The starters all average 9.8 ppg or more: Gillespie (15.0), Reese (12.2), Rice (13.8), Miguel (9.8) and 6’10” NBA prospect Derik Queen (15.0). They are solid defensively in every aspect. They prefer to score in the paint and are avid rebounders. This will be their first game away from home.
As for the Wildcats, they just beat a pretty poor Penn team 93-49. The Cats discovered if they work the ball around to get open 3’s, they can make some. They made 18 vs. Penn. Eric Dixon (24 ppg) will get double teamed all game long. He needs to break that and get the ball out to open men. Parker (15 ppg) will need to cut down on his turnovers. 6’11” Boakye will need to stay out of foul trouble. Maryland is the most talented team the Cats will have faced. Historically, Nova has played up to their competition.
A win here and a ton of heat comes off of Coach Kyle Neptune of Villanova. However, I hope I am wrong but, the Cats would need by far their best performance to date to win and they just aren’t playing together well enough. So…backing Maryland-6.
