Mad Jack is right.

HELLMUTH was the youngest player ever to win (I believe he was 26 at the time).

STU UNGAR won it at a 27 year old (the first time) in 1980.

HUCK SEED won the WSOP in 1996. I believe he was 27 or 28.

MORTENSEN is the fourth youngest to win the WSOP.

Now, who can tell me WHO WAS THE OLDEST PLAYER EVER TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER?

Mad Jack:

Johnny Moss is right! You sure know your poker history. I'm impressed. In fact, Moss won it the first time when he was 70. Many speculate that had the WSOP begun fifty years earlier, Moss might have 6 or 7 world titles. The counterargument is that the fields were much smaller back in the 1970s (less that 100 players) while today's competition brings in 600 + entries into the main event. That's a lot of very tough competition.

You also made a point earlier about the EGOs in poker and yes indeed they are HUGE! I'd be glad to elaborate on this and start a dialogue here if there is interest in such a discussion.

Good thing there's no ego here on this site, right Jack?

Sorry for a stupid question, but could I enter this championship if I wanted to(hypothetical of course)
biggrin.gif

Was just wondering if you had to qualify or does the 10grand get you in. Another, has a no-name ever came in and won. And one more, I don't see how a 29 year old can beat a man who has been playing poker for as many years as he is old??.....like I said earlier, I know nothing about this but just got curious after seeing guys I respect spending 8 hours of listening to the stuff

REPLY: No such thing as a stupid question. Many people probably do not know the answer to this. Fact is, if you have $10,000 you can enter the event. Put your cash on the counter and you get a seat. For those of us of more modest means, the "affordable" way to get in is to win either a SATELLITE or a SUPER SATELLITE. In a SATEELITE, ten people put up 1/10th of the buy-in (in this case $1,000 plus vig) and the ten players play for the whole wad -- $10,000....which is an entry to the big dance. Well over half the players get in either by winning a single table satellite or a super-sateelite, which is basically a tournament where seats are given away instead of cash prizes. I do not play in many tournaments. However, the big events I have played have always been paid for by satellite entries. That's the way to go.

Q: Was just wondering if you had to qualify or does the 10grand get you in. Another, has a no-name ever came in and won.

REPLY: Yes, in 1979 a total novie won the world championship. His name was Hal Fowler. He must have made a deal with th devil. He hit every straight, made every flush and just creamed the rest of the table. It was amazing. Sad thing was, Fowler quit his job since he was convinced he was a "great player." He went broke a few months later (lost it all to the really good players) and died broke a few years later. Incredible story.

Q: And one more, I don't see how a 29 year old can beat a man who has been playing poker for as many years as he is old??

REPLY: Heres' the great twist of the game. There are so many great players now, and so many helpful materials that even a young player can master the game in what took years to accomplish in previous decades. It's hard work. But it can be done. Also, remember that those players that have been playing for 30-40 years have often developed some very bad habits and they are often INFLEXIBLE to change. That makes them easy targets. In short, just because someone has played the game 40 years as opposed to 5 years does not mean he has absorbed more knowledge. I'll take the older player who knows more about money management and life, but as far as strategy, few players over 60 can really hac

REPLY: I'm not sure what else to add, but I'd be glad to respond to anything else you have...and let me kow if you enter the big one someday. It's better than sex or snowskiiing. Trust me.
