The whole press conference is really good. I enjoyed it. You might have to back it up to the start because this will probably start halfway through the video.

I like Iverson

I loved that... but if you go back into what happened before its no way as bad as it sounds the media jumped on it as Iverson doesn't need practice..and that is what everyone heard and saw.. in the espn documentary on Iverson it gives you a preview of what happened before.. as a coach when we 1st heard it we all jumped on him.. he never said he was against practice...even in the interview he's saying " we are talking about practice during the press conference..listen to what he is repeating ..." not talking about the games but Practice..." he didn't handle it right but that sound bite went universal .. Hubie Brown talked about it and defended Iverson.. if anyone ever saw this kid play he gave 110% on the court.. he never said : I don't need practice .it was just that he missed one and everyone in the world wanted to jump on him ...this is kind of far far fetched but John Thompson the coach of Georgetown never allowed his players to be interviewed ever when Ewing graduated and did his 1st interviews for the Knicks it was so bad.. Knick PR people had to teach him how to speak to the media.. I had a few players that did Tv and radio interviews after games [told this story here a long time ago} this kid Donnell stopped a D-1 player on defense to under single digits. when we upset this team . when the game was over he was inter vied by Gary Sussman now VP of the Brooklyn Nets.. Donnell repeated " you Know " maybe 10 times in a 2 minute interview.. everyone had taped the game and the next day in school Donnell was made fun of his teammates and kids in school.. he was devastated.. Imagine holding a future Marist player who leads the league in scoring avg 25 pts a game and holding him to 11 pts .. Donnell was player of the game..more people in school were talking about the post game interview then our upset and his performance .. I knew about Ewing from the years before.. I had 2 teachers come in who agreed to work with my players on how to speak publicly. it was really my fault because we never discussed post game interviews the only thing I told my players were to respect the other team we beat and say nothing about the officiating.
I was john Thomspon yet I knew better ...it changed and we did "coach" somewhat post game speaking..so 15 years later

I am principal at another high school .. I get a call from Donnell... He is driving from his home in NYC and driving thru near our school tomorrow,, He asked me if I had the game of the week tape.. He his a master Sargent in the Army being reassigned to Fort Drum in upstate NY Can I meet him ,his 3 kids and wife at a diner on the highway to fort Drum I told him I would bring the tape video..I didn't want to say anything about the post game interview but he did.. coach I hope you have that interview.. I laughed and said its still there but let your kids know you drew 3 offensive fouls in that game and had Andy L in trouble from the start..
The next day I got to meet Sgt Smallwood and his family and treated them to lunch....was so proud of him.. and in all my years running that " Box" no one ever played it like him at 6'3 lanky and quick forward... but was so quick.. lost contact the past 10-15 years with him .. I was invited to his retirement or another ceremony} don't remember which} at Fort Drum but couldn't make it..
I hugged him by his car before he left for upstate with his family.. and his last words to me were something like" I held Andy L to under double digits but you subbed for me and he got 2 pts".. I didn't remember that but I'm sure its true

anyway not sure
how I got into this story talking about Iverson

jas I agree.. he was one tough player and even on defense..this guy is still loved in Philly as one of there best players ever..because of his heart and intensity...the 76'ers fans loved him because of his " blue collar" approach of the game ...but still loved that press conference with "Practice "
It didn't come out the way he wanted but its still used today... but I could see Barkley saying that..
Sorry got off the topic with my story.. the point I was trying to make was Thompson never ever had his people work with press conferences with his players . not trying to make any excuse for Iverson....but I knew that I still didn't prepare my own players ...and some of my players were "classified" sp ed kids ..but after the Donnell mistake that never happened again .. and many of my players did a lot of post games interviews ..
