Griese, asked to comment on Brady, his former Michigan teammate, in Denver yesterday, said, ''He's a good friend of mine, a very smart guy. He knows what he's doing. I've been happy for him that he's having success. I look for him to continue to have that success. I expect him to play a smart game, not make any mistakes, and give his team a chance to win.''

Griese, who was a walk-on at Michigan and beat out Brady when he was a freshman, was asked about the Brady-Drew Bledsoe quarterback controversy.

''Tom's been playing smarter football than Drew was. That's why they're winning,'' said Griese.

An interesting stat on Brady: He now holds the NFL record for most passes without an interception at the start of a career (134). The previous mark was set by Warren Moon (130).

In 1997....Lloyd Carr had to choose between Brian Greise and Scott Dreisbach as his starting QB. Well, we know who got the nod.

Soph Tom Brady, approached Coach Carr and said...." Coach, with all due respect, you made the wrong choice at QB. You shoulda picked me".
