Preview: Royals (41-63) at Rays (57-48)
Venue: Tropicana Field
Date: August 03, 2009 12:08 PM EDT

A series with the Kansas City Royals figured to help the Tampa Bay Rays in their pursuit of the AL East's top teams, but manager Joe Maddon's club will have to go through the major league's ERA leader if it hopes to avoid merely splitting the four-game set.

Looking for his first win since June 28, Zack Greinke still presents a big challenge Monday for a Rays lineup that has been inconsistent lately.

After winning the first two games of this series, Tampa Bay improved to 8-0 against the AL-worst Royals this year. On Sunday, though, James Shields carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before the Rays crumbled late and lost 4-1.

"If a guy takes a no-hitter into the eighth and you still beat him that day, then it's a good team effort," Royals starting pitcher Brian Bannister said.

Ben Zobrist hit a ninth-inning home run for the Rays (57-48), who slipped six games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East and 5 1/2 behind Boston for the wild card.

Tampa Bay scored 15 runs in the first two games of the series, but its bats have occasionally faltered during a sluggish 13-13 stretch since the beginning of July. The Rays tallied three or fewer runs 14 times over that span, including the perfect game tossed against them by the Chicago White Sox's Mark Buehrle on July 23.

It likely won't be much easier against Greinke (10-6, 2.08 ERA), but the ace hasn't been able to stop the Royals from losing lately. The right-hander, still a strong contender for the AL Cy Young Award, went 0-3 in five July starts despite posting a 2.53 ERA.

Kansas City was shut out twice last month with Greinke on the mound, and the team scored a total of six runs while losing all of his appearances.

"We have found a way to lose a lot (in July) no matter how it is," Greinke said. "Just been a real bad month for everyone."

The Royals (41-63) went 7-19 last month, and Greinke didn't get a decision in a 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay on July 18 after he allowed one run and nine hits in seven innings. The Florida native is 0-2 with a 3.09 ERA in five career starts against Tampa Bay.

He's dominated several of the Rays' top hitters, as Carlos Pena is 2 for 18 (.111) with nine strikeouts and Carl Crawford is 1 for 16 (.063) against him. Evan Longoria and Pat Burrell are a combined 0 for 13.

Just as he did last month, Greinke will match up with Scott Kazmir. After losing a chunk of his season to a quadriceps injury, Kazmir (5-6, 6.22) has often struggled with efficiency.

The left-hander allowed one run and four hits in six innings against Kansas City, then was tagged for five runs and five hits over six innings during Buehrle's perfect game. Kazmir then tossed a season-high seven-plus frames Tuesday in a 6-2 victory over the Yankees, giving up one run and five hits for his first win since May 9.

"People have been wanting more out of him, but he's been putting himself back together slowly," Maddon said.

Kazmir will face one of the weakest offenses in the majors as the Royals lineup has totaled 15 hits in its last three games. Kansas City is averaging 3.5 runs in its last 75 games - losing 52 - but it can finish its road trip at 4-4 with a win in this contest.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Kansas City - Zack Greinke (10-6, 2.08) Tampa Bay - Scott Kazmir (5-6, 6.22)

One day after his team was able to halt a lengthy losing streak, Zack Greinke will be hoping to put an end to his own personal run of frustration when he takes the mound for the Kansas City Royals for this afternoon's matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Greinke was far and away the American League's best pitcher over the season's first two months, as the talented right-hander amassed an 8-1 record with a spectacular 1.10 earned run average through April and May. The summer hasn't been as kind to the 2009 All-Star, however, and he enters today's tilt mired in a stretch of five straight winless starts.

The 25-year-old certainly hasn't pitched badly as of late, though. Greinke has surrendered just four runs and struck out 24 batters in 20 innings over his past three outings, but has a loss and two no-decisions to show for those efforts.

In his most recent start, Greinke limited Baltimore to two runs and fanned seven over the first six innings before exiting with the Royals holding a 3-2 lead. The Orioles proceeded to score three times off the Kansas City bullpen in the seventh to deny him a possible win.

Two starts earlier, the Orlando native yielded one run over seven innings against the Rays on July 18, but also wound up with a no-decision when Royals relievers again failed to protect a one-run edge.

Greinke has also been victimized by a lack of run support, with Kansas City having mustered a total of only six runs during his winless streak.

He'll be facing Tampa Bay for the ninth time in his career and sixth as a starter today, and owns an 0-2 record with a 3.31 ERA against the Rays.

The Royals had lost their first eight meetings with Tampa Bay this season before breaking through with a 4-1 victory in Sunday's third test of this four-game series. Starting pitcher Brian Bannister delivered seven shutout innings to lead the way, and the Royals scored twice in both the eighth and ninth frames to snap a scoreless deadlock.

Bannister (7-7) outdueled the Rays' James Shields, who carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning that was broken up by John Buck's leadoff single. After Alex Gordon reached base on a throwing error by Tampa catcher Dioner Navarro, Mitch Maier stroked an RBI single to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Gordon would later score on another Rays error during the inning.

Maier added a two-run single in the ninth and finished 2-for-3 to help Kansas City stop a four-game slide and win for only the fourth time in the club's last 19 contests.

Shields (6-8) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on two hits and struck out six over 7 1/3 innings in a tough-luck defeat.

"I pitched as well as I can go and we lost the game," he said afterward. "It's just one of those times where I felt like we could have won the game, but you have to tip your cap to their team."

The Rays will try to rebound behind Scott Kazmir, a first-round selection in the same 2002 draft in which the Royals chose Greinke with the sixth overall pick. The hard-throwing lefty picked up his first win in over 2 1/2 months this past Tuesday, when he permitted just one run on five hits over seven strong innings to defeat the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field.

Kazmir, who was sidelined more than a month with a quadriceps injury earlier in the season, has not produced much success at home in 2009, however. Although he's 2-3 in eight starts at the Trop, the two-time All-Star has an unwanted 8.16 ERA in those games and has served up nine homers in 43 innings.

The 25-year-old is just 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA in seven lifetime starts versus Kansas City, but did throw six innings of one-run ball against the Royals in a July 18 showdown with Greinke. He also received a no-decision.

Sunday's win was only the Royals' second in their last 12 visits to St. Petersburg.
