I figured I'd update a previous thread I posted asking if anyone had experience haggling for prices at the big box stores. We were in the market for a new fridge, washer, and dryer. Of course my wife wants the pretty red w/d and our fridge has to be cabinet depth which you get raped on price-wise. I figure I had to appease her if I'm gonna go get the new 9th generation pioneer plasma but that's another story.

Home Depot: currently has 10% off all fridges. I ask the sales rep if i buy a fridge and both the washer and dryer on the spot, what's the best he can do. He says well I can give you 10% off on both the washer and dryer. I ask if I can open a card and double dip (getting another 10%) and he says no. I tell him then basically you're just giving me the 10% off on all 3 items that I could get by opening a card in the first place. I even offer to buy the 800 dollar weber grill to sweeten the deal for him. He won't budge any than 10% so I say 'see ya'.

We are driving home and see an appliance store called HH Gregg. So what do I do? Well, I tell a little fib. I tell them that home depot offered me 15% off all three items and asked if they could beat it. I also asked if they could price match the dryer since it was 100 bucks cheaper at Home Depot. The sales rep says sure I can beat it, let me run it by my manager.

So he comes back, matches the home depot prices, and then gives me 20% off the total bottom line. I've never haggled before and it felt a little dirty but we saved over 1 grand so it was worth it.

Just thought I would update in case anyone is in the market for new appliances. I guess it just depends on the salesman and the store but if you have some time to shop around it can pay off.

Do you think it might have anything to do with Home Depot workers not being on a commission based salary?

Dont know about HH Greg though...

But whether you buy from HD or not, that employee is still getting their $12 per hour.

Only way to haggle is to talk to the store manager I would think.

Retail is for suckers......good job......I think as you say haggling is in my blood. My dad was good at it and it rubbed off on me. Especially today when retailers are hurting for business I think there are deals to be had. You played hardball and won, good for you..........I think I'm at my best when leasing a car. I just play one dealership against another, it seems to work pretty good.:SIB
