on fri my wife got a call from my urologist with the results of my biopsy.. ihave prostate cancer ! spent the weekend doing research and talking to people who have undergone treatment.. not nice. UNDERSTAND, if you are a male it is not if, it is when you will get it ! some die with it, some die of it, and others are cured. problem is the after effect of treament [ impotence and incontinence] are sometimes worse than the disease.. all of my tests and markers are so low that i do not have to be treated at this time, BUT is was because they found it so early.. point of this mssg is that all of you should know what your psa is, if you don,t know, find out !!!those who read this, hit reply and post your psa number, will be interesting to see how many know... after hours of reading[ thank god for the internet i decided what i would do if treatment was needed now. tell you all later... doc

i'll find out any day now. still waiting for my blood results.

i've thought about you several times since you posted about them taking the biopsy. i'm sorry, if they need to get a biopsy from me i guess i'll just take my chances. i just can't do that, period.

yes you can. He had a sort of horror story with his; it's not always that bad. You just need to have about 10mg of Valium on board, and you will be fine. You tell the MD you're nervous, can't bear the thought of it, etc., and he'll give u a dose of valium or ativan, and you'll be fine.

redneck, thanks for the post. It's a good reminder/thought provoker for all here. Typically, men don't take care of their problems nearly as well as women. Prostate cancer is very treatable if you catch it early like u have. Hope u have a good outcome. I've never had the test done; it's recommended at age 50 (40-45 if high risk), so I'll have it several years from now.

redneck.....i know you`re first reaction was total panic.....and i don`t blame you....

but,my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer and after her surgery,a very renowned surgeon told us that her prognosis was extremely poor....he gave her around a year....

well, she got an excellent oncologist and went through chemo......and lived another 10.5 years and it wasn`t cancer that finally got her at almost 86....

so,don`t panic....just gather as much info as possible and get whatever treatment that the best doctor`s you can find precribe for you....

i`m going to get my psa checked, probably tomrrow...my prostate`s acting up a bit, even though my own doctor, who`s my age, has the same issues....

Redneck, I am sorry to hear about your health problems and I fully understand your need to warn others about prostate cancer. However, that gives you no right to call me an asshole simply because I corrected you.

Mark Garzotto said:
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American men. Overall, roughly one in six men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. The older you are, the more likely you are to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Although only 1 in 10,000 under age 40 will be diagnosed, the rate shoots up to 1 in 38 for ages 40 to 59, and 1 in 15 for ages 60 to 69. In fact, more than 60% of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65.

What he should and may have said if you live long enough you will have a prostate problem not necessarily cancer.

new redneck , I have tried for several weeks to get your email regarding this exact subject. Jack sent me your email which bounced back, evidently it's changed. I knew you were knowledgeable about prostate cancer from geron. My dad has been battling prostate cancer for over 10 years, Gleason of 9, has been treated at Dana Farber & mass General. He has had about every clinical trial & chemotherapy available, also radiation. Long story, but basically went for physical years ago, had slightly elevated psa, got biopsy, urologist only took biopsy from 4 sites, supposed to be 12. Biopsy came back negative, next year went for physical, much more elevated psa, now to late for surgery, Dana Farber doctors surmise cancer out of prostate, so surgery no option. Has targeted radiation. After that several therapies over the years, including hormones etc. etc. lives fairly normally.

Eventually cancer figures out hormones, and all clinical trials, you bounce from one trial to another, trying to control psa and cancer hot spots, which is prostate cancer metastasizing to bones. Eventually no trial or chemotherapy will stop the cancer advancement. Bone cancer is extremely painful, some of the worst pain there is. Nerves in your legs stop working because of all the chemotherapy that has been done. Soon you can't walk, you fall etc. etc. resigned to wheelchair. Cancer continually advances throughout bones, (refractory). Soon you are anemic and platelets are depleted from so much chemotherapy, your body and blood can't produce red or white blood cells. Your body can't fight infection, and your energy is non existent, because your anemic and sick.

this is the stage my dad is at now, was taken by ambulance to hospital with 104 fever and seizures Last night. This is the first non scheduled trip for him to the hospital throughout his decade plus ordeal with prostate cancer. It is a nasty nasty fuking disease. And it is definitely a killer. And it strips you from every bit of strength & pride you think you have. Guys IF YOU HAVE FAMILY & KIDS YOU CARE ABOUT,GET CHECK FOR THIS. LIKE THE DOCTOR SAID, RELATIVELY EASY TO DEAL WITH IF CAUGHT EARLY.

sorry for long post, tried to be as real & honest as possible.

New redneck please get my email from Jack.
