OTTAWA SENATORS (42-22-10-6) AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (40-20-14-6), 7 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers try to draw closer to the Atlantic Division title tonight when they welcome the Ottawa Senators to the Wachovia Center for a key East matchup.

Philly, with 100 points, leads second-place New Jersey by two in the Atlantic race with two games remaining for both clubs. The Flyers are third in the conference race -- two points behind No. 2 Boston.

Ottawa, meanwhile, is currently fourth in the East with 100 points, but must first catch the Bruins in the division before it can snag a top-three seed. The Sens are also just a point ahead of Toronto, and two in front of New Jersey in the conference.

Philadelphia moved back atop the Atlantic on Thursday, as Sean Burke made 24 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and lead the Flyers to a 2-0 win in Montreal.

Simon Gagne and Michal Handzus both scored for the Flyers, who snapped a two- game losing streak.

Burke's performance was a much-needed one, as Robert Esche had produced poor outings in the team's previous two games. However, Esche is expected to start this evening and in Sunday's regular season finale on Long Island.

On the injury front, the Flyers' Keith Primeau (concussion) and Eric Desjardins (broken forearm) both returned to the lineup Thursday. Primeau had been out since February 12, while Desjardins suffered his injury on January 17.

Philadelphia has lost three of its last four home contests.

Ottawa, meanwhile, is unbeaten in four straight. On Wednesday, Martin Havlat scored late in the third period to snap a tie and lift the Sens to a 5-4 win over Florida at the Office Depot Center.

Havlat, Marian Hossa and Antoine Vermette each posted a goal and an assist for the Senators, who earned their second straight win and are 3-0-1 in the last four.

Wade Redden and Chris Phillips also scored for Ottawa, while Ray Emery finished with 15 saves. Regular starting goaltender Patrick Lalime is currently nursing a knee sprain, and is expected to be ready for the playoffs. Martin Prusek will start tonight.

The Senators will conclude the regular season at home against Toronto Saturday night.

This evening's tilt is the first between these teams since a fight-laden affair on March 5 at the Wachovia Center. In the final two minutes there were five all-out brawls and one of the fights involved Esche and Lalime. The game featured an NHL record 419 penalty minutes, breaking the mark of 406 set in February of 1981 between Minnesota and Boston.

The Flyers won that game, 5-3, to snap a five-game series winless streak (0-2-3) in the regular season.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS (37-29-10-4) AT CAROLINA HURRICANES (28-33-13-6), 7 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The New York Islanders attempt to clinch the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference tonight when they visit former coach Peter Laviolette and the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center.

The Isles, who are three points up on ninth-place Buffalo with two games to go, can secure their third consecutive trip to the postseason with a victory.

New York drew closer to the playoffs on Wednesday, as Roman Hamrlik and Mark Parrish each posted two goals and an assist to lead a 5-1 rout of the Montreal Canadiens at Nassau Coliseum.

Adrian Aucoin also scored for the Islanders, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Rick DiPietro finished with 20 saves.

If the Isles land a playoff spot, their three straight berths would come on the heels of seven miserable years out of the postseason field. Coincidentally, Laviolette, who will coach the Hurricanes tonight, guided them to the playoffs the past two seasons before being dismissed last summer.

New York will finish the regular season Sunday against visiting Philadelphia.

Carolina, meanwhile, is merely trying to play spoiler at this point, and has lost two straight. On Tuesday the Canes dropped a 3-2 decision Boston at the RBC Center. Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist to lead the Northeast Division-leading Bruins.

Ryan Bayda and Josef Vasicek scored for Carolina, while Kevin Weekes made 26 saves in the loss.

Carolina failed on three attempts on the power play and has not scored on its last 26 tries with the extra skater.

The Hurricanes will finish their campaign Sunday in Florida.

Carolina is 2-1 against New York this season.

(Sports Network) - The Colorado Avalanche hope to move back atop the Northwest Division standings tonight after visiting the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Colorado and Vancouver are tied with 97 points, but the Canucks currently have two more wins and would take the tiebreaker. Both teams have two games remaining, with Vancouver visiting San Jose this evening.

Peter Forsberg had a goal and two assists for Colorado, while Chris Gratton, Teemu Selanne and John-Michael Liles also scored. Tommy Salo finished with 24 saves for the Avalanche, whose division title streak dates back to their time in Quebec as the Nordiques.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (21-47-8-4) AT ATLANTA THRASHERS (32-36-8-4), 7:30 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - Two clubs preparing for early summers tangle tonight when the Atlanta Thrashers welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins to Philips Arena.

Atlanta has lost two of its last three games, including Monday's 4-2 setback in Toronto. Gary Roberts was credited with the go-ahead goal early in the third period and he added an assist to lift the Maple Leafs.

Dany Heatley and Serge Aubin posted goals for Atlanta, while Pasi Nurminen finished with 34 saves. The Thrashers lost in regulation for only the second time in nine games (5-2-1-1).

Heatley and Aubin scored goals 45 seconds apart early in the first period to grab a 2-0 advantage, but Toronto would close the game with four unanswered goals.

While the playoffs aren't in the Thrashers' immediate future, the club still has something to play for. Winger Ilya Kovalchuk is third in the NHL in goal- scoring with 39 tallies -- one behind Columbus' Rick Nash and Calgary's Jarome Iginla for the league lead.

Atlanta will finish its fifth season on Saturday in Tampa.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is 0-2-1 on the heels of a three-game winning streak. On Tuesday the Pens dropped a 4-2 contest in Washington, as Trent Whitfield scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Capitals.

Dick Tarnstrom and Ric Jackman each tallied for the Penguins, who have lost three of their last four road games. Jean-Sebastien Aubin stopped 25 shots in the setback.

The Penguins will finish their woeful campaign Sunday against visiting Washington.

CALGARY FLAMES (41-29-7-3) AT LOS ANGELES KINGS (28-28-16-8), 10:30 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames continue to jostle for playoff positioning tonight when they visit the struggling Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center.

The Flames picked up a huge 1-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes Wednesday night at the Saddledome.

Jarome Iginla scored the game's only goal -- his 40th of the season -- as Calgary clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 1996. The Flames are three points behind the Dallas for fifth place in the Western Conference. Both teams have two games remaining.

Iginla also reached the 40-goal mark back in the 2001-02 season, when he notched a career-high 52 markers. He is currently tied with Columbus' Rick Nash for the NHL goal-scoring lead.

Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves for his fourth shutout of the season in the win. Kiprusoff backstopped Calgary to the postseason with eight saves in the first period, five in the second and 14 in the third period. He now has seven career shutouts.

The Flames have won six straight versus the Coyotes and swept the season series, 4-0. Calgary hadn't swept the season series with Phoenix since the 1993-94 campaign, when the Coyotes were the Winnipeg Jets.

Calgary closes the regular season in Anaheim on Sunday.

The Kings have little to play for at this point after being eliminated from postseason contention. It showed Wednesday night, as they fell 3-0 to the San Jose Sharks.

Los Angeles has lost nine in a row (0-8-0-1). The Kings have also dropped five straight home games and suffered their seventh shutout of the season.

Roman Cechmanek finished with 22 saves in the losing effort.

The Kings honored Luc Robitaille, who became the NHL's all-time leading scorer among left wings, with a pre-game ceremony.

LA will finish up its season with a road contest versus the Sharks on Sunday. The Kings are one defeat short of tying the franchise record of 10 straight, set during the 1983-84 season.

Joe Thornton, Boston Bruins - Thornton left Thursday's game against the Capitals in the third period with what the team calls an "upper body" injury, reports the Boston Globe. Though we have no idea what it is that Thornton actually injured, coach Mike Sullivan said that the injury isn't serious and Thornton will "ice it down" and be fine. For what it's worth, the Boston Herald speculates that it's a rib injury.

***** Rafalski, New Jersey Devils - Rafalski participated in his first full practice yesterday since breaking his leg and said that he felt good, reports the Newark Star-Ledger. Though he is practically healthy, Rafalski's conditioning is not up to speed just yet so he considers himself doubtful for both the Devils' remaining two games. Coach Pat Burns, however, would like to see Rafalski suit up for the season finale but that will ultimately depend on Rafalski's conditioning. He will be back for the playoffs for sure though so he is a fine choice in post-season pools.

Mikael Renberg, Toronto Maple Leafs - Renberg is ready to return to the Maple Leafs lineup for Friday's game against the Sabres, reports the Toronto Star. He had been sidelined with a hamstring injury and will probably skate on a line with Mats Sundin and Gary Roberts if yesterday's practice is any indication. Alexander Mogilny will shifts down to play with Ron Francis and Chad Kilger while the other lines will see Joe Nieuwendyk with Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarovsky, and Robert Reichel with Tie Domi and Fitzgerald.

Sergei Zubov, Dallas Stars - Zubov skated again yesterday as he recovers from a charleyhorse but won't play in Friday's game against the Wild, reports the Dallas Morning News. There is a good chance that Zubov will play Sunday in the season finale against the Blackhawks.

Jason Arnott, Dallas Stars - Arnott did not go on the ice yesterday as he rests his sore groin, reports the Dallas Morning News. He will obviously not play Friday against the Wild and this time appears to be doubtful for Sunday's game against the Blackhawks.

Dan Cloutier, Vancouver Canucks - Cloutier is the probable starter for Friday's game against the Sharks.

Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils - Just for the record, Brodeur told the Newark Star-Ledger that he expects and hopes to start both games against the Bruins this weekend. The best fantasy goalie in the league simply doesn't get tired and assured the media that he'd be ready to go for the start of the playoffs despite the heavy workload this season.

Sean Burke, Philadelphia Flyers - Burke played his best game of the year for the Flyers last night, stopping all 24 shots in a 2-0 victory over the Canadiens. With Robert Esche struggling in each of his last two games, Burke's performance has created somewhat of a goalie controversy in Philadelphia in regard to who the playoff starter will be. Despite the latest turn of events, the job is still surely Esche's to lose but it's safe to say that he'll be on a shorter leash than previously anticipated.
