orginal concern from last monday:

Tiller says Orton will start against Illinois if healthy

October 07, 2002

Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton spent Saturday night in a Lafayette area hospital, then was back on the practice field on Sunday.

Orton, who was removed in the third quarter of Saturday's 31-28 loss at Iowa, was diagnosed with a concussion and released Sunday morning. He practiced with the team Sunday evening.

True freshman Brandon Kirsch was outstanding in relief against Iowa, but Purdue coach Joe Tiller said Orton will start next Saturday at Illinois if he's healthy.

"He was throwing the football, moving it around, and actually executing our game plan," Tiller said of Orton. "We knew (Iowa) would be a difficult team to run against. If we went to no-backs, we thought we could have success throwing the football. He was putting it on people's hands."

If Orton can't play, Kirsch looks like a top-flight replacement.

"He's got a quick release, he's a smart guy and he's got some athleticism about him," Tiller said. "That why we elevated him to No. 2 ahead of a guy (Kyle Smith) that's been in our program a year-and-a-half."

fans seem to think it doesn't matter?

"the bunker"
even if orton doesn`t go

even if orton doesn`t go

back-up kirsch is awfully good....and he can run....looks to me like purdue improves every week and should win vs a shabby illini defense.....road teams fare well in this series....the over may be worth a look also....g.l.

The Windy City
Orton is a GO now. MRI is negative and he says he's fine per local newspaper.

The only thing that bothers me about the Illini game is that Illini blitzed Purdue all game long last yr and it gave Brandon Hance fits and really shook up his confidence, ended up losing his starting job and quit the team. Orton does have better composure in the pocket, so he should be able to do better vs the blitz. Or we might not see blitz at all, since Illini rarely blitzed this year so far. Gonna try to find out what Illini's gonna do on D.

Like the Under a lot more, Purdue has a very underrated D, and they're really the reason they have 3 wins this season.

gardenweasel: totally agree Kirsch played outstanding last game, in hostile territory, no less. Thought I was watching Brees running a couple of time, but even faster. But it was only less than a quarter, so we'll see what happens next month, next yr. very excited as a Purdue fan to see these 2 QB's for the next 3 yrs, though.
