Anyone put any merit in putting average or putts/round?
VJ is is ranked 2nd in putting ave and K Perry,Daly and Calc in top 50 yet Tiger ranks 102.Price admittedly struggling with flat stick ranks 12th in putts per round.
Now it is obvious that those missing greens will have an advantage on putts/round.I have always tried to do a three ave and give extra nod on those leading in GIR's to try and come up with some sort of picture. Is there an accurate system of measuring putting?

FWIW I think putts/round is a useless statistic. Seve Ballesteros again finished on top of the European Tour rankings for that stat and that only goes to show how little use that stat is for predicting performance.

Could I just summarise some results from Stephen Shmanske (Journal of Sports Economics, November 2000 - will be submitting my own paper once New Year is out of the way

). Using results & stats from the 1998 PGA Tour season, he found that:

A one-yard increase in driving distance would lead to a $980 increase in earnings per tournament

A one-percentage-point increase in driving accuracy would lead to a $833 increase in earnings per tournament

A one-percentage-point increase in greens in regulation would lead to a $1,381 increase in earnings per tournament

One less putt per tournament (N.B. he is using putts per GIR as the relevant variable here) would lead to a $8,501 increase in earnings per tournament.

BTW, the relevant figures for the LPGA Tour were:

Driving distance: $47
Driving accuracy: $43
Greens in regulation: $656
Putts: $1.926

Converting those in percentages for relative weights ($ increase per stat/$ increase for all stats) they would yield:

PGA LPGA
DD 8% 2%
DA 7% 2%
GIR 12% 25%
PA 73% 72%

Hope this is of interest
