Outright picks (1pt):

Brian Davis to win 16/1 e.w. @ Sportingbet, Sporting Odds and BetDirect
Nothing much to enthuse about this week, but in a very weak field Davis does look a worthy favourite. His last victory on Tour was only four weeks ago and he has finished in the top-5 here, just as he did last week in Dubai. This is a course that plays fairly short with more of an emphasis on the short game and this should also favour Davis this week.

Phillip Price to win 40/1 e.w. @ Sportingbet and Sporting Odds
Price is another who has a good short game and he should also be favoured by the often windy conditions that prevail here in the afternoon. He failed to deliver as a 100/1 selection last week, but at least there were signs of form in the first round when he would had been very well-placed had he not incurred a silly two-shot penalty. He finished 2nd in 1999 and could easily repeat that performance in this field. This price is too high for a player who win a prestigious event on the Tour last year (European Open).

John Bickerton to win 50/1 e.w. @ Tote
Bickerton has yet to win on the Tour so place-only bets would seem appropriate, but at a best price of 8/1 for a top-5 finish, it is no alternative to 50/1 each-way. His 2004 form is steady as it usually is - he is a good player to back in match bets as he has a high success rate in finishing in the top-25 - but he does tend to specialise in certain events and this is one of them. He has finished 4th, 35th, 4th and 8th in four appearances at Doha and that cannot be ignored. So long as he doesn't hit the front too early, he may yet secure his maiden Tour win.

Matchup plays (1pt):

Maarten Lafeber to beat Robert Karlsson -105 @ Aces
Lafeber has played in four tournament this year and finished ahead of Karlsson on every occasion, just as he did on this course last year. I see no reason for the Dutchman to be the underdog in this matchup.

Gary Orr to beat Raymond Russell -111 @ Stan James
Similar story in this matchup. Orr has played in three tournaments this year and finished ahead of Russell on every occasion, just as he has done in both of his last appearances at Doha. Orr should certainly match his top-20 finish of last week.

Adding (1pt):

Gary Evans to beat Ricardo Gonzalez -111 @ BetandWin
Gonzalez has had a very slow start to the season with two missed cuts and a 52nd place in three starts. He crashed out of the Dubai Desert Classic last week with a 2nd round 81. Evans has finished ahead of him in all three events and was a top-10 finisher last year, so he does look the likely winner of this match.

Greg Owen to beat Soren Hansen -125 @ Centrebet
Have opposed Hansen in previous weeks because of his erratic play and will do so again this week. In four starts this year he as missed the cuts twice, finished 4th and 56th. Little comparison to Owen who as two top-10 finishes already this season.

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
Later than usual getting started this week. I'll see what it gets me.

David Howell(19/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ 5dimes
http://www.sportinglife.com/golf/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=golf/04/03/10/GOLF_Qatar_Howell.html

Peter Lawrie(66/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ Bet365
The guy has not been shy about going low, and appropriate strides rather than a sophomore slump is what I've seen in the making. Some well rounded seasoning and some skills on the greens might be an interesting combination when he forces his way into the crucible of really contending, and a stronger field than last year just enhances the value if he finds this moment to his liking. The venue and timing strike me as appropriate, although carrying my cash also seems like a righteous reason for taking a crap in this spot.

Joakim Haeggman(66/1 & 60/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ Bet365 & 5dimes
I look at his finishes this season despite still lying 93rd in total putting stats, the Sunday momentum from last week, and the physical setback he is looking to overcome, and I'm optimistic about what Haeggman has planned for this week.

Charl Schwartzel(100/1) for 0.50* e.w. @ Bet365
Trending well in his sophomore season and his pedigree suggests some aptitude when the Shamal wind kicks up.

In closing, it seems well worth noting the fury over the way the field was reduced at the cut last year, especially after the players had gamely competed despite the dangers and uncertainties of war and terrorism (see links). I'm sure I would be disappointed if one or more of the players involved were not poised to make serious amends for the perceived injustice, and I'll have my eyes open for value in-running if their is evidence of an appropriate opportunity.

Great call on Haeggman guys!!

Outrights - Final update: 1-2; -0.50pts

Davis 3rd
Price 14th
Bickerton mc

Small loss on the plays, though there were chances for a better return. Price started the final round in 12th place and only four shots out of the lead, but never moved forward on the last day, while Davis did at least look like he might catch the leaders, but never did.

Matchups - Final update: 1-3-0; -2.27pts

Lafeber/Karlsson LOST (Lafeber wd)
Orr/Russell LOST by 7
Evans/Gonzalez LOST (Evans wd)
Owen/Hansen WON by 2

Can't do much when two of your selections throw in the towel!

European Tour ytd
Outrights - 2-4; -2.12pts
Matchups - 3-6; -3.75pts

LIA - Glad you saw what I did and went for Haeggman as well - nice to see as many of us as possible share in the spoils - remember, the only competition we have is the bookies! Now if only Todd Hamilton can pull his finger out over at Honda and hand me a second one! Pity I didn't do the double on those guys - then again, you never do, do you.......
