QB Trouble Has Bettors Taking Aim

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

An NFL QB can make and break a team. In the latter part of Dan Marino?s career, the Miami Dolphins made the playoffs in five out of six years.

Since Miami?s No. 13 hung?em up the playoff appearances have been few and far between and the number of starting QBs numerous.

With Jim Kelly as QB, the Buffalo Bills made four straight Super Bowl appearances and since Kelly?s retirement?

The Bills are lucky if they make it into the postseason as a Wild Card.

There are several teams in the NFL this season dealing with troubling situations at the QB spot. Looking at this week?s betting action, the public is well aware of the travails these teams are going through, as their opponents are the popular plays heading into Sunday?s action.

Let?s have a look:

Indianapolis Colts at Carolina Panthers

If you think about it, Jake Delhomme, David Carr and Vinny Testaverde are peas from the same pod.

Delhomme quarterbacked the Panthers in their finest hour, a last-second loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Carr was behind center for the woeful Houston Texans? in 2004 when the team had their best season to date. Vinny Testaverde had his best years with the New York Jets, almost leading them to a berth in the Super Bowl back in 1998.

Individually all three have had varying levels of success, but the latter two are causing headaches for bettors who are doing research for this week?s game.

Jake Delhomme is out for the season, David Carr has been practicing with a sore back and Testaverde played well in Carolina?s last game, but coach John Fox hinted that Carr would get the start if healthy and it might not be a bad thing if he does get the start, as Carolina is 3-1 ATS when David Carr plays.

With the uncertainty at the QB position the Panthers are listed as home dogs of 6?-points with 90% of the early action on the Colts, who are obviously set at QB with that guy named Peyton.

Buffalo Bills at New York Jets

Speaking of the Jets, they are having their own troubles with signal callers.

Vinny Testaverde?s replacement, Chad Pennington has been ineffective as the Jets only have one win so far (1-5-1 ATS) and rumors circulated that Kellen Clemens might get the start at QB earlier in the week. Coach Eric Mangini put those rumors to bed when he named Pennington starter but we could see Clemens out of the bullpen if the offense is flat.

The more uncertainty at QB, the less appealing to bettors. The Jets uncertainty in the pocket has this week?s opponent, Buffalo, as the underdog getting the most attention from the bettors, with 65% of the wagering volume coming in on a Bill team getting a field goal on the road.

New Orleans Saints at San Francisco 49ers

While QB Alex Smith has been out with a shoulder injury, Trent Dilfer has subbed in and despite losing both his starts the Niners are 1-1 ATS during that time. That might not be anything to celebrate, but when you consider that San Fran?s ATS record was 1-3 with Smith behind center, it starts to look better.

Dilfer will be back on the bench this week and Smith back in and with the resurgent Saints in town, who have now won two games in a row straight up (1-1 ATS). With the improved play from New Orleans? O-line in their last two performances, this could be a long afternoon for a QB who was struggling before missing a handful of games.

SPORTSBETTING.COM
is seeing the action pour in on the Saints as a 2.5-point road favorite, as they are getting 80% of the volume bet on this tilt.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Both the Jaguars and QB Byron Leftwich are probably regretting parting company at the outset of the season.

After a lackluster preseason, Leftwich was set loose and eventually signed with the Vick-less Atlanta Falcons, only to suffer a leg injury and have surgery. The Jags, who thought they were just fine with David Garrard at QB, were kicking themselves when Garrard suffered an ankle injury forcing the team to name Quinn Gray as its starter and sign Todd Bouman as insurance.

The Jags had rattled off three straight ATS wins but that streak came to a halt when Garrard was injured last Monday night in their game vs. the Colts. Gray took over behind center and did not look good?at all.

He gets the start again this week and that has bettors lining up to bet against Jacksonville. The Bucs, as a 3.5-point home favorite, are seeing almost 80% of the action in this one.

It will be interesting to see how these teams fare this week and what that means for the pointspreads and betting trends in upcoming weeks.

Totally Covered

Let?s have a quick look at where the ?Over/Under? money is going this weekend.

While Carolina is having QB problems (see above) the Indianapolis Colts are not. If it wasn?t for Tom Brady and the Patriots, Peyton Manning and the Colts would be the talk of the NFL.

Sitting at 6-0 with the league?s third best offense, the Colts should put their fair share of points on the board and 80% of the bettors are expecting the game to go Over 44.

Coming off a quadriceps injury, Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young probably won?t be his usual mobile self against the Oakland Raiders. Young is at his best when he uses his legs and scrambles and without that ability, the Titans? offense will have less bite. With the Total set at 40? and with Young?s limitations, the Under is getting most of the play here at 75%.

The last second game winning field goal by Denver Broncos K Jason Elam on Sunday night probably is still on the minds of the Pittsburgh Steelers and who better to take out their aggressions on then division rival Cincinnati?

The Bengals? defense ranks 29th in the league and when you factor that with an angry Steelers team, bettors aren?t expecting a tight, low scoring affair. The total is set at 48 and 80% of bettors are going Over.

Enjoy the games this week.
