Really wanting to go there and there are some great deals from Atlanta that have popped up for the fall. Is this a good area in late September/early October and if anyone has been, do you have any areas best to stay in for walking/Ubering around, as well as good restaurants? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Which is better, Quebec city or Montreal?

My wife is from Quebec City & that is where we met....So I have gone up there quite a few times & each time I have loved that city more & more....The last time we visited there we stayed at The Chateau Frontenac during Christmas & was really great.... It was like Old Europe....If you don't stay there you should at least go there for drinks....

Old Quebec is where you want to visit first.... It is a walking area that features great restaurants, cafe's, wine bars, & art galleries....It reminds you of Europe....One of our favorite restaurants is Guido's.... But you cannot really go wrong with any of the places there....

Here is a web site that tells you everything that you want to know about Quebec....

https://www.quebecregion.com/en/

Montreal is also a great city to visit.... They also have an Old Montreal.... It is a bigger city than Quebec....

You will probably land in Montreal & you spend a few days there.... You won't regret it....

Quebec City is about 150 miles east of Montreal.... We always drove, but you can take a plane there also....

September & October are great times to visit that area....

Have a great time....

If in Montreal..............

Go to "Old Montreal".

Go to Montreal Canadiens game (if there in October).

Go to Montreal Alouettes game.

Note #1: If you go to Quebec City you will have trouble communicating in English, not exactly a ton of English speakers in Quebec City.

Note #2: If you have "time to kill" while you are in Montreal, take the train to Ottawa, Ontario. Well worth the trip to see all the sights of Ottawa.

Note#3: A boat trip down the St Lawrence River is pretty cool.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Be sure to eat some of that oozing, weeping, stinky, unpasteurized soft French cheese up there with your wine!

The gov't in Quebec legalized the sale of raw-milk bries and camemberts, and similar such cheesy stuff, several years ago - it's the only place in North America you can buy real French soft cheese (unpasteurized and aged less than 60 days).

And a Montreal product even beat out some real French cheese at a recent competition, setting off a stink!

When I lived in Maine, cheese lovers I knew there made regular trips up to Quebec to fill their bags of Brie de Meaux, Morbier, traditionally made feta and mozzarella, Reblochon, Roquefort, St. Nectaire, etc...

Old Town Montreal you see below is very nice!...The 41 foot obelisk in picture commemorates the original 17 or so founders of Montreal (Fort Ville-Marie). My 8x great grandpa was one of these hardy pioneers, Augustin Hebert, listed on the plaque (wife Adrienne actually wasn't present, she joined up with him later).

I am not saying you can't find somebody that speaks English, you can, just saying compared to Montreal, Quebec City is "night and day" when it comes to English speaking. You will find many sings in Quebec City in French only, way less so in Montreal. There are parts of Montreal where the majority speak English not so in Quebec City. But of course anywhere in Quebec......English is widely spoken in Tourist Areas, for obvious reasons.

Bottom line, anywhere in Quebec you can find somebody that speaks English, the easiest spot to find someone that speaks English is in Montreal. Or to put it another way if you visit Quebec and only speak English you'll be fine, just a little easier to communicate in one locale then in other.

Wow guys, thank you for the info. Much appreciated. Well checking the Hotel Frontenac for our dates is $1,379.00 per night CAD. They should let you take the bed and pillows and sheets home with you for that price, LOL. Able to get the Marriott in Old Quebec City for points, which is awesome. Will research it further, going in early October. May just stay in Quebec City for the 5 days. I am sure there is plenty to do and venture out into. But then again, Montreal is intriguing and extend the vacation a few days. Anything else to add to this thread may help others as well. Thanks Al, Terry, and Kick.

Yes the Frontenac's prices are crazy.... We stayed there right after Thanksgiving & the price was around $250-$300 per night.... Try to go there at least for a drink....I love Marriott Hotels....

Enjoy

Late July, the wife and I and 8 friends cruised from Montreal to Boston. In Montreal, we spent one night before the cruise in old Montreal at Le Petit Hotel. Nice place, free continental breakfast buffet, all the staff was helpful and accommodating, shower head in shower was fabulous. Went to the "light show" in Notre Dame Basilica, ate in local restaurants, windowed shopped. Next stop was Quebec City. Great "Old Town", but took a bus tour to St. Anne's Canyon! Beautiful place, GREAT waterfall. Don't miss it!
