Hi Guys,

I arrive at LAX on Fri 7 Oct (around 7am) - first time to the US.

Will be heading straight down to San Diego and had originally planned to get a rental car and drive - a few people have said that if you don't know the area the roads/traffic can be a nightmare - but wanted to get some opinions from anyone who lives locally.

Is it really that bad driving out of LA ??
Are we better to just book a limo or shuttle bus ??

Thanks in advance for any comments ....

Hi DTB,

Everything has been going fine - just been flat out with work the past 18 months and haven't had the time to be capping golf - infact hardly even followed golf this year.

Have been focusing mainly on Aussie Rules football in recent months - you should check out the Off The Wall forum :)

It's not bad at all once you get out of LA. Should be 2 hours without any traffic about 3 if you go between 4-7 rush hour. 5 south straight into the most beautifull city in america :)

The drive couldn't be any easier. Right outside the airport is the 405 freeway....Go south and stay on it until you're in San Diego. It will turn into Interstate 5 but you won't even notice the merge. Close to 200 miles and you won't even have to turn......

I have to mention the traffic. If you're leaving around rush hour (4-7) you'll have traffic at the beginning of your trip, but it will lighten up as you go. Nice drive once you leave Orange County and head south.....right along the beach.

Have a nice trip.

I think it would be more of a headache to book the shuttle.

The drive is an easy one as far as directions are concerned. You will just have to deal with the traffic. If there are two or more of you, get into the car pool lanes as fast as you can.

Dan - are you a cab driver? First time in the U.S., does that mean he is an idiot? I have been to foreign countries and rented a car at the airport and managed not to get lost. And what, he is too weak to put his baggage in the trunk? At 7am on Friday most of the traffic is going in to LA not in to San Diego.

I've made that drive once, and I remember tons of traffic, lots of lanes, and lots of people switching lanes back and forth constantly.

I think you'll be driving on the other side of the road/car than what you're used to, correct? That might take some adjusting.

Be ready for a lot of honking horns.

Ferdville, your comment about cab drivers/foreign countries made me think. There's no wonder so many who are from other places can make their living in the States as a cabbie. If you've ever been to other countries that have very few if any traffic laws, it's a logical fit. Driving in the US is a breeze, lol, comparitively!

You are right about that. I think the worst may be in Mexico. But I don't think they have much on the taxi drivers in Boston. I have never seen such disregard for traffic lights. It is like a red light is just a suggestion.

Absolutely - I think it is called the Surfliner. There is a great idea. Fabulous scenery and reasonably relaxing. That is what I would recommend also.
