Young threw and completed bunch of deep passes that went for TD's.

There was ZERO pass rush on him and I think I remember seeing only a 4 man rush from Kansas. Not blitzes. So if Kansas is rushing only 4, that means 7 guys back.

WHY everytime Texas threw deep, there was only 1 on 1 coverage?

What kind of defense was Kansas playing? Were they even playing defense?

Texas has superior athletes and were favored by 30+pts. So we know they were going to win big @home.

That still is no excuse for Kansas to have 1 on 1 coverage on all those deep balls Texas completed. Kansas was not blitzing and rushing only 4. Or was I seeing things?

When you blitz and bring pressure, then you leave yourself to man on man coverage. But I don't think Kansas was blitzing. I remember seeing a 4 man rush AND Young getting ALL DAY to throw.

Did everyone else see the same thing? I want to make sure I am not the only one. I am capping USC vs Texas and want confirmation on this before I form my opinion. If this is true, Texas in world of trouble when they face USC. If these are the kind of defenses they are going against, they are in trouble both offensively and defensively against USC.

USC was -19 vs CAL @CAL, but everytime USC threw deep Cal had 2 men on coverage. Unless CAL was blitzing.

Anybody can confirm what I saw? If so, what kind of defense was Kansas playing?

I always look for your analysis and enjoy reading your write-ups, but who are you kidding? If ANYONE believes you have not already formed an opinion on a potential USC/TEX game, they are f*cking kidding themselves.

If you are trying to compare who either team has faced on defense, they are about even. TEX played Ohio State on the road and USC played at Notre Dame. Other than that neither team has faced a world beater. Don't confuse blitzing with being an effective defense either. Anyone can blitz but it doesn't make them the 85' Bears.

I already have 2-3 pages of notes on USC/Texas all capped out. That is what I did this week and part of the reason I took week off from official plays. So yes I already formed an opinion on this game. I still have from now until Jan. 4th to add/omit what I already capped. I think my post and questions are VERY VALID!

Any Kansas fans on this board? Texas fans? Can I get an idea what the hell Kansas was doing out there defensively? They sure made Texas look good. I am trying to find out if Texas really is that good or if it is their competition. What I saw was a 4man rush with no pressure on Young and 1 on 1 coverage deep. Doesn't make sense to me. If these are the caliber defenses Young is playing against, he is going to be confused like no other against USC and Pete Carroll. That is what I am trying to determine and make an educated guess.

Kansas is supposed to have one of the better defenses in the Big 12. Right? So what was Kansas doing out there?

*Also don't think it is against the board rules to handicap future matchups.

Dont put much stock into games like today.
Mack Brown does not fear teams like KU,OKST,BU so he is trying to show Young off. Make no mistake about it.Brown wants the Heisman more than Young himself.
You may have noticed the experiment against OKST this season going wrong at half.
2ndH is when Young started taking off and being himself.

Kansas expected Young to be on the loose. Instead he saw 1 on 1 and hung up some punts for WR's to run under.

I still feel like USC is going to show Texas defense something they have never seen, just like USC did to OU last year.
I think Young can keep things close against USC for a while.

I am looking at USC 41 Texas 24.

Texas Longhorns

Nov. 12
Texas 66 ... Kansas 14
Texas cranked out 617 yards with 336 rushing yards on the nation's number one run defense on the way to a 52-0 lead in the first half, Vince Young threw four touchdown passes, including a 45-yard bomb to Limas Sweed and a 64-yarder to Quan Crosby, and Aaron Ross returnd a punt 71 yards for a touchdown. Ramonce Taylor ran for two scores, including a 12-yard dash in the second half. KU finally got on the board on the second play of the second half on a 59-yard David Pino touchdown run.

Player of the game: Texas QB Vince Young completed 19 of 27 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns.

Stat Leaders: Texas - Passing: Vince Young, 19-27, 281 yds, 4 TD
Rushing: Ramonce Taylor, 14-96, 2 TD. Receiving: David Thomas, 4-76, 1 TD

Kansas - Passing: Jason Swanson, 17-35, 148 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Clark Green, 11-69. Receiving: Charles Gordon, 6-47

What to take away from this game: Vince Young ran for -4 yards against Kansas; what a bum. He's getting time to throw and he's making the most of it throwing accurately to all spots on the field. Right now, few quarterbacks are throwing the deep ball as well as he is, but also give credit to a receiving corps that's coming up with the big plays. The offensive line is flat-out killing defenses; that's the number one run defense in America that Texas just ran over. Young might be the signature superstar, but Texas is proving to be far more than just No. 10.

Here is my problem with your statement. You just boasted how Texas ran on the #1 run defense in the country. That is great. But lets take a look at who Kansas played in OOC play.

Fla Atlantic
Appalachian St.
Louisiana Tech

:mj10:

Can you tell ANYTHING about Kansas and their #1 rush D from OOC play? Do those 3 games, (ALL HOME GAMES I MIGHT ADD) help with the stats? So take away the 3 OOC games, and now you are judging Kansas in conf. play. Who is impressed with the Big 12?

From what I saw in Kansas today was pathetic. Only rush 4 men and still have 1 on 1 coverage downfield? Does that make sense to ANYBODY? Does Kansas have safety's? This happened repeatedly. Give Young all day to throw (rushing only 4) AND play 1 on 1 coverage downfield? If these are the caliber defenses Texas is facing, they are going to be embarrassed Jan. 4th. More embarrassing if Young wins the Heisman and then plays like $hit on Jan. 4th.

I think this is exactly what happened to OU against USC. They just were not tested and prepared with their schedule. The way it looks, Texas will have the same problem but maybe WORSE! All Texas is bringing to the table is a high school gimmick offense with extremely mobile QB. Should not be hard for Carroll to contain. Texas does nothing sophisticated.

Oh yeah one more stat. Texas is now the #1 offense in the country in terms of PPG, just topping USC. They also have a top 15 ranked defense in the country.

I am not one for predictions, but I can tell ya USC vs Texas will be one helluva game.

Dont kid yourself, USC D has NOTHING on Ohio St.

What top caliber D's has USC faced this year?? None on the level of OSU that is for sure.

In fact the more I look at it, USC schedule is a joke at least in terms of defensive squads. I mean facing squads like Zona St(giving up over 500 yards to Olsen today) & Hawaii is a real strong test.

If Texas played USC on Jan. 4th and Texas played Ohio St. on Jan. 4th I honestly think they would have tougher time against USC's D than Ohio St. You def. can disagree and make strong argument against my opinion. I admit that.

USC is more talented on D than Ohio St. USC also has better DC than Ohio St. (huge advantage) I also think USC is FASTER than Ohio St. You'll see on Jan. 4th.

People think Ohio St. D is so great and put down USC D. Well Ohio St. D benefits from playing in the Big 10 and having so many home games. USC D should be healthy on Jan. 4th.

Don't get me wrong. Ohio St. D is great. Def. better defense than USC in Sept./Oct. But there D won't be better than USC D on Jan. 4th. I would say Texas would have tougher time scoring on Miami D. USC has Pete Carroll and DO NOT underestimate him. Ask OU fans. Ask Michigan fans. Ask Iowa fans. After Jan. 4th. Texas fans will know.

What people across the country don't know about USC D is their talent, injuries and how often the starters played. You do realize USC starters on D have only played 2 games to the final minutes. ND and Arizona St. Both teams were held below their averages and both games on the road. All other games USC has had the game over at half, or end 3q. Carroll plays EVERYBODY on his team.

Lastly, if you look at ppg/stats the teams have given up, USC D is very very misleading. #1 blowouts and USC starting D only playing 2 complete games. #2 how many special team TD's USC has given up #3 injuries. #4 youth of this defense from start of year #5 how many road games USC has played this year (5 of first 7 on road) #6 USC getting everyones "A"/"best shot" game and the many high powered offenses USC has played.

ADD THAT ALL UP and stats are very very very misleading. Don't believe me now but after Jan. 4th you will. Look at how the USC D has been improving since ND DESPITE the additional injuries.

Didn't Ohio St. D give up 382 total yards of offense to Texas? Didn't Texas make STUPID turnovers in that game? (not give OSU D credit for all 3 Texas TO's) They were DUMB plays. Lets see the #'s against USC.

Texas will def. be the most talented D USC offense has faced. The problem is OU was the most talented D USC faced last year. You need to know how to defend a sophisticated balanced offensive attack with star playmakers at multiple positions lead by an experienced QB who is the #1 QB in CFB. Texas will have no clue because they never seen anything like it. Ask OU. Ask Michigan. Ask Iowa.

USC will have this advantage over everyone until the other conf. learn to play offense like the Pac 10. I said this 3 years ago when I predicted the USC dynasty.

I am not doubting USC offensive power. It is amazing.

USC is not the only one blowing people out. UT has only scored under 40 once this year vs Ohio St.

Their offensive styles are different. Some may prefer USC's more open pro style offense, some may prefer the "basic" line up & beat the man in front of you running game UT brings.

You are definately right about one thing. We will find out on Jan 4th.

May the better team win.

That is the problem. That will not get it done against a Pete Carroll defense at USC. Especially if Carroll gets 4 weeks to prepare with his NFL caliber assistant coaching staff. That is what other conf. don't get. USC does not play that brand of football. They prefer to use their superior athletes AND out scheme you with great coaching. Texas has the athletes ($hit load of talent) but not the system. USC can play smash mouth line it up across your man football. They choose NOT too because it is much much more difficult to stop a sophisticated balanced offensive system.

Like you said, the better team will win. We will have to wait and find out. I am just giving my take why USC has the advantage. :) I am looking for answers to why USC will not win.

Scott you are the ultimate spin master if I ever saw one. "Especially if Carroll gets 4 weeks to prepare with his NFL caliber assistant coaching staff." I loved that line...you sound like Dr. Evil.

Admit it, you're worried about Texas and you're looking for reasons as to why you should possibly hedge. Texas definitely has a much more diverse offense than USC does.

USC's top 3 scorers (ignoring kickers) are LenDale White (#5 in the nation) with 108 points, Reggie Bush and Dwayne Jarrett (tied at #19) with 84 points each.

So their top 3 have accounted for 46 TDs.

In order to get to 46 TDs on the Texas team, you have to add up the efforts of Ramonce Taylor (#51 nationally) with 72 points, Jamaal Charles (tied for #92) with 60 points, Vince Young (48), Henry Melton (42), Selvin Young (36), and take 3 of Billy Pittman's 5 TDs.

USC has 5 guys with at least 4 TDs: White (18), Bush (12), Jarrett (12), Leinart (5) and Smith (4), and has 13 guys who have scored a TD.

Texas has 8 guys with at least 4: Taylor (12), Charles (10), Vince (8), Melton (7), Selvin Young (6), Pittman (5), Sweed (4) and David Thomas (4), and has 18 players with at least 1 TD.

USC is averaging 28.9 more points than they surrender per game. They rush for 126.4 more ypg than their opponents. They pass for 107.8 more ypg than they surrender.

Texas' average margin of victory is 35.8 points. They rush for 170.9 more ypg than their opponents, and pass for 79.2 more yards each game than the opponent musters.

Looking just at Texas - opponents have returned just 8 punts this year, for a grand total of 67 yards -- or roughly the average kickoff return by Steve Breaston at last year's Rose Bowl.

Texas has fumbled 27 times and lost only 6, while we have forced 18 fumbles and recovered 10.

Texas has converted 50% on third down, compared to 29% for our foes.

Texas' margin of supremacy by quarter:

1st - 82 points (132-50)
2nd - 131 pts (167-36)
3rd - 80 pts (110-30)
4th - 65 pts (92-27)

Texas has 5 rushers with at least 350 yards net rushing. The YPC are 8.3 (Taylor), 7.6 (Charles), 6.6 (Vince), 5.2 (Melton) and a "paltry" 4.4 (Selvin).

You already know about our Defense.

Its seems like you are so bias Scott that you are blind to everythhing that people are posting. You ask people questions and when they answer your only response is how much better USC is than UT is. Nobody will know for sure until the game is over but right now I don't understand how anyone can have USC 41-24. UT isnt going to let them run up and down the field on them like the no defense playing teams in the Pac 10. Texas will try to control the game with the run and will look for big plays out of Young. I see the game being very close IF USC even gets there. They have a couple more "tests" ahead of them that Texas does not have. GL to all of you though.

When people debate you usually have 2 people on opposite sides. I want to know everything about Texas and why someone thinks Texas could beat USC. Doesn't hurt to gather as much info as possible. Like I said, I already capped this game but still open to learn more and see what others think.

UT isnt going to let them run up and down the field on them like the no defense playing teams in the Pac 10.

That is what Iowa, Michigan, and OU said prior to playing USC. That is what MANY OOC opponents have said about USC prior to playing them in the regular season. I don't want to hear someone just say they think Texas will be able too. IMO, there is no evidence they can. If there is, I am looking for it. I am looking for analysis why someone thinks they can.

Whether you think I am bias to USC isn't relevant. You always see me explain why I feel a certain way and backing up my "opinion."

Good post supported with stats. I enjoyed reading it. However, I disagree with what you are trying to conclude with it.

Felonious Monk said:

It is true. USC's OL and DL coaches were OL and DL coaches in the NFL last year and neither were fired. They left their NFL position job to take the same position job at USC.

Carroll has had 4 weeks to prepare for Iowa, Michigan, and OU for BCS bowl games. We know the results. Mack Brown's only accomplishment was beating a not very good Michigan squad last year.

Admit it, you're worried about Texas and you're looking for reasons as to why you should possibly hedge. Texas definitely has a much more diverse offense than USC does.

Right now I wouldn't be very confident in USC beating Texas. But Jan. 4th I will be. Right now I will predict USC to win by 15-20pts over Texas in the Rose Bowl. Similar game to the OB last year. If USC played Texas this Sat. I think the game might be 50/50 with USC slight advantage. I'll know a hell of a lot more about USC after Fresno St. and UCLA and then with bowl practices.

Texas does not have a more diverse offense than USC. However, you proven your argument with stats. I applaud you. But USC offense is a machine. IMO BUSH and White are top 5 RB's in the country. WR Dwane Jarret is #1 WR in the country. Then you have bunch of other star but not elite players. USC FB's are prob. the best catching FB's in the country. TE BYRD is top 5 in country talent wise but not stat wise. His #'s are hurt because of surrounding talent. Then USC #2 WR Smith is star WR that is completely overshadowed. I think he had 3 TD catches against OU in OB. But he is a nobody in the USC offense. The USC OL is top 3 in the country. QB is #1 in the country. Am I stretching the truth on any of this? You are going to tell me Texas has a more diverse offense? I don't think so. On Jan. 4th you will see the Texas D look clueless while the USC D with a gameplan. Texas offense is a gimmick high school offense.

*USC needs to develop a 3rd WR option and is trying to get freshman WR Patrick Turner to be that guy. He will be better than Mike Williams and Dwane Jarret. He was #1 high school WR in the country last year out of TN. Star in the making. He would be the starting WR for 90% of college teams in the country. Each week is seeing more and more playing time and always producing.

USC is averaging 28.9 more points than they surrender per game. They rush for 126.4 more ypg than their opponents. They pass for 107.8 more ypg than they surrender.

This stat will mislead you. USC has only played 2 games all year where 1st string O and 1st string D played 4 quarters. (@ND and @ASU) Most of USC's games were over at half or by the end of the 3q. USC also has given up $hit load of points on special teams. Horrible special teams for most of the year except last 2 games where USC has improved. That skews the ppg.

Texas' average margin of victory is 35.8 points. They rush for 170.9 more ypg than their opponents, and pass for 79.2 more yards each game than the opponent musters.

Thats great stuff but who has Texas played? The best offense Texas faced was TT who runs a gimmick offense that isn't balanced. TT offense always gets shut down against quality opponents. Who else has Texas played with a good offense? I can tell you the offenses Texas seen all year are LIGHT YEARS behind what USC will bring on Jan. 4th. Ask OU D.

Texas has fumbled 27 times and lost only 6, while we have forced 18 fumbles and recovered 10.

Texas seems to turn the ball over in big games. I think Texas had 3 turnovers @Ohio St., 1 turnover against OU (but could easily have had more), and 2 turnovers in 1h against Texas Tech. 2/3 were played @Texas.

Last year against Michigan in BCS Rose Bowl Texas had 2 turnovers. Against #2 ranked OU last year Texas had 3 turnovers.

Against USC you cannot turn the ball over. Especially at the end of the year. Playing USC Jan. 4th in the Rose Bowl for the BCS NC will be the biggest game EVER for these Texas players and coaches. Good luck!

USC had ZERO turnovers against OU in BCS bowl, 1 turnover against Michigan in BCS bowl (that turnover came at the end of the 4th quarter on the Michigan goal line where USC was going to score a TD), and USC had ZERO turnovers against Iowa in BCS bowl game. So essentially USC has played 3 straight BCS bowl games and had ZERO turnovers. USC is a very well coached team who is prepared and plays their best ball at the end of the year.

You already know about our Defense.

Your defense is very talented and overall very good. I respect your D. However, your D has no idea how to defense USC's offense. That is the truth. They really have no clue. USC has faced your DC twice and he was no match against USC and he had superior athletes on defense. I would not be confident in him coming up with a gameplan to stop the best offense EVER at USC.
