Why are the State Athletic Commissions in charge of judges in boxing and mma? In the three big sports the actual sport itself is in control. They can punish the refs or umps for not doing their jobs either well or correctly. In boxing and mma one of the most important parts of it is the judging but they have no way to control who they get. They can have judges they know have given bad decisions but yet they're stuck with them if the athletic commission says so.

Is there a reason for this?

Yeah Gambling. I have said it for years. This is how u can control wagering. I have watched the same 4 douche bag for years screw up decisions in boxing and all the decisions side with the books. Imagine that. If u want to watch a sport that will be fair go to one that doesn't have gambling involved. High School would be a start. I love these books rules where guys like Rumble Johnson losse by an eye poke. I lose my wager but then they correct it a week later but i still hold a losing ticket.
