In response to people cheating in fishing tournaments......

If someone were to catch say........20 bass in a lake. They keep the bass in an underwater cage of some kind over night. Then the fishermen go out during the tournament and scuba divers rig each fish to the fishermans line and he reels them in.

After claiming his prize of a brand new truck and a fully rigged bass boat, how do organizers catch this cheat? Is there a way of monitoring this? It seems for $60,000 there would be elaborate schemes that would work and no one would get caught..........

Just asking. For a friend.....

Most big tournaments the winner has to pass a lie-detector test

Generally they will fail the polygraph after the tournament that all prize winners have to submit to. Also tournaments of that size often have an "off-limit" time just before the start of the tournament. In the elite and FLW is a month but they open it up for the 2-3 days immediately prior to start of tournament, but very few anglers stick more than one or two fish during practice days for fear of sore lipping their found fish. You may set the hook on one in certain areas just to check size and gender of the population in that area. Every angler fishing these tourneys are acutely aware of the other anglers actions and habits. If I saw a tournament angler boat a fish during practice, I always shut down right away and checked to see what they were throwing, technique, and what they did with that fish. On the contrary if I had a bite during practice and knew other anglers were in the area, I never set the hook and let the fish shake off. I would act as if nothing ever happened and once the fish got off I'd reel in my shit and hide the bait, quit fishing, and just sit there maybe re-line one of my many reels until they left.
Pro bass fishing is ultra-competitive my friend. To the point that I never came to weigh in with the lure I was using still tied up. More often than not I'd put all of them away and take out a couple different rods and put a completely different type set up on the deck and even add a plastic or something in a totally different color and presentation. For instance if you cut off your big swimbait or umbrella rig and tied up a spinner bait to the same rod, that wouldn't work. Every angler at that level knows far too well that nobody is throwing a 1/2 ounce spinnerbait on an 8 foot heavy action swimbait or jig rod with a 3 or 4:1 gear reel all day, not a chance in hell.

the polygraph wouldn't hold up in court :0003

Wouldn't and couldn't end up in court. Participants have to sign a terms and conditions waiver and tournament coordinator is ultimate authority. Only way it ends up in court is criminal court as most offenders caught do some prison time.

so you couldn't contest the legitimacy of a prize in court if it amounted to a lot of money?

Not sure what you're asking. Do you mean can the men accused of cheating sue the organization hosting the tournament for the prize money saying there's no proof except a polygraph so they should get the prize? No they cannot. The polygraph is tried at least twice if failed. Rules are discussed and read at every tournament and everyone must attend that discussion.
In most scenarios there is more evidence. A diver is not realistic as there are always observers and/or camera boats around you. Catching and storing them in a basket isn't realistic either as they will show visible signs of distress and people will see you putting them in the live well
