Hi. I am having a strange problem all of a sudden. When I am replying to a thread, if I try to add a smilie at some point, as soon as I click the smilie the screen shoots back to the first message in the topic. Theres no way it will accept the smilie. I must admit I am not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers.
Can you help me Please?

What OS??? When did this start happening??? Any other unusual activity (problems w/ other sites)??? Is there anything you changed or someplace unusual that you went just before this started happening??? Every forum is different so you probably should contact the owner of the other site. One thing that might work is for you to clear your browser's cache memory and try reloading the page that's giving you trouble.

Hi again KMA, the same thing happens at several different sites that I log into. Will not let me add smilies to a reply. Also I have since discovered that my printer does not work. It is a new printer (epson 820) that was installed about 6 weeks ago. All of a sudden when I am on an internet site, and try to print something, absolutely nothing happens. I phoned back to Toronto to the tech support for Epson, and they uninstalled and reinstalled the printer and drivers and instructed me to make a test print, and it works ok. But it still will not let me print anything from the internet. They said the trouble must be software, likely the internet explorer. I am totally lost. Do you have any ideas, please? Thanks again KMA.

Skanoochies. P.S. I guess i should have noted that I am using Windows 98.

First of all, thanks for all the great tips in the forum. I have a slight problem with my computer as well.

I have an old Pentium-II, 300Mhz. It has been working fine with a dial-up connection. But it is not doing so well with SBC Yahoo DSL. Here's the problem. I couldn't get connected initially to DSL. Called service help line. Was told to buy a new computer or reformat my C-drive. I have reformatted my C-drive 3 times. I am connected now with DSL, but I haven't noticed much difference in speed. That is not my main problem though. The problem is when I go to shut-down, my computer gets stuck in the Windows98 screen. The fan, and I am assuming the computer, remains on indefinitely. I have to manually hit the power button on the computer to shut it off. Then when I boot up the computer the next time, it goes through a few minutes of scanning the C-drive for errors. How do I fix this problem? Please don't tell me to go buy a new computer.

Thanks in advance.

Skanoochies,

Have your keyboard settings gone iffy somehow??? It sounds as if the computer is seeing, say the 'home' key instead of ':'
for the internet. Try making sure you have the most up to date version of Internet Explorer. And/or use a different browser like the one from:
http://www.opera.com
to see if that solves the problem. (I actually find that much better for printing because there is more choice over which section of the page, and whether to include pictures or not when printing)

CryBoy,

It makes me cringe to think of a Help Desk advising you to reformat the C:Drive. It seems to me that should always be the very last resort. It also seems to me that if there's a problem in shutdown on an otherwise clean harddrive that the conflict is likely with their hardware and/or software, but that's just my take on it.

More than likely if you are connecting with their "package" of software that is the problem. 98 is considered dying technology and most companies dont want to deal with it. My suggestion??? Buy a cheap router and treat the DSL as a local area network and DITCH the YAHOOs swill.

EUREKA!! I tried using Netscape and I could both print and use smilies. So I went back to IE and same problem. So I uninstalled and re-installed Int. Expl. and the problem is fixed.

Thanks KMA, really appreciate your patience and willingness to help us folks that aren`t too swift when it comes to this stuff.
I hope everyone else feels the same.
