Why did Varitek bat right handed vs righty Mussina last night? I saw it...but, didn't hear why?

He was 4 for 46 batting lefty against him (not sure if those were the exact numbers, but something similar). Decided it can't get any worse and he's more effective as righty in Boston with Green Monster not that far in left.
