I don't really know anything about the ponies, but I bet $10 on Tiago to Show and cashed a ticket for $18.50. Why don't you get your original wager back also? If I bet $100 on a football game and win, I get $100 plus my wager. If this is the case, what incentive is there to bet on something at even odds or 6/5 odds. Maybe I'm lost.

Above the Clouds....
You did get your wager back. Think of it this way, If you bet $2 on an even money shot you would expect to make $2. An even money shot pays $4, your $2 plus the $2 you won. Hope this helps!

Husker Nation....you do get back your wager, it's in the 18.50. You cleared 8.50 which was almost even money. If Tiago had paid 4.00 you would have cleared 10.

Husker Nation......the winner Rags To Riches paying $10.60 would have got you back $530.00 for your $100 football bet and your $100 would be in there with a profit of $430...

Thanks for your replies. The way I look at it is like this: Tiago closed at 6/1. It paid $3.70 to show and I got paid $18.50. I understand that part of the math, but does the track keep my $10 wager? It just seems to me like I should get that back too like betting on anything else. I'm sorry if it's not sinking in to me. Please reply.

You are getting it back, it's in the $18.50. If Tiago won at 6-1 and you had $10 to win on him you would have got back app. $70 in which your $10 would be in there. You mention him being 6-1 and I hope that's not confusing you as that's for if he wins which is a different pool of money than the place or show pool. For every $2 you bet you were given $3.70 back which is $1.70 profit for every $2. Your $2 is being given back in the $3.70.

Ok a 5-2 horse pays $7. You put up $2 and you got back $7. You're original $2 plus the $5 you won. You get the wager back on all bets.

Thanks Jake. Like I said, I don't know much about horses. I didn't know the pool of money and payouts had a different breakdown for place and show. Look at it this way: I guess I'm the guy in front of you at the track at the betting window that you want to hit in the back of the head with a hammer! I promise I won't post any picks for the Breeder's Cup. I love all my madjack brothers. I better stick to football. Good luck to you.

Thanks for everybody's help. I'm still gonna stick with football.

Take Nebraska to win the North and Texas to win the South. Texas to beat LSU for the title. Just a vision! By the way, I did pick Curlin across the board three weeks ago and was stumped by the payout!!!!! I'm sure you that won't suprise you. A guy at my local track gave me the pick. $5 win, $5 place, $5 show !!
