I am going to Vegas this weekend and was wondering which is the best sportsbook is to watch bases? Also, I am not staying on the strip and will have a car, where is the best place to park if you are going to try and hit most of the casinos on the strip. Also, are there any good places to park downtown? I know binions has good odds for craps (100x), are there any places on the strip that offer more than double odds. Also, any dining reccomendations? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

You can park at any hotel, you can use the valet service it is only a couple bucks. As for what sports book is best, they are all pretty much the same. None of them will be too busy, Mandalay Bay is beautiful, Hard Rock has great women, but really all the books are exactly the same there!
I dont know much about downtown!

I prefer the Stardust myself. Nice big book with lots of TV's. Big parking lot right outside the main entrance to the Sports Book.

Strictly Personal Opinion:

(Applies to sports betting only...not poker or pit games)....

BEST ODDS: MGM GRAND (while other books employ sports/odds experts, MGM is somewhat behind the times and often has soft lines -- or is slow to react to Don Best movements). They have a management style that they would rather not employ any wiseguys, so they take a few hits, and just make it up on volume. In terms of everything else, I despise this casino. This is everything a casino should not be (corporate-oriented, impersonal, and it takes 15 minutes to find a place to get a cup of coffee). MGM is the anti-Christ.

BEST VISUALS/SERVICE: (tie) MANDALAY BAY and MIRAGE Both books are first class in every way. I give the edge to MANDALAY, because it's usually not as crowded. If you get bored, you can always go over the the House of Blues, 40 steps away. Furthermore, it's one of the first casinos to be built since sportsbetting has effectively taken over horseracing as the premier wagering/spectator sport interest. The seating reflects that, whereas some of the oputdated places stil have 3 horseplayer seats for every one sports betting seat. The big screen TV at MANDALAY is awesome. I love this casino.

BEST PLACE TO GET TO KNOW A FRIEND: I like the LAS VEGAS CLUB downtown. Lot's of small time bettors on benches eating hot dogs. It's the "old Vegas." The entire casino has a sports theme. No high rollers here, but probably my favorite hangout when watching sports (note: TVs are small and it's really small time...but you can't beat $1 Heinekens)

SIDE NOTE: You mentioned BINIONS HORSESHOE. The World Series of Poker is starting this weekend. That place is going to be a madhouse. Forget about watching a game in there. The sportsbook is terrible. Of course, I've probably put more money through the windos at Binions than any other joint.

OTHER COMMENTS: STARDUST is a great place for the ultra-serious sports gambler, but the place hasn't had a face lift since the 70's. The place is also a freakshow at times. You see all types in there. LV HILTON used to be one of my favorite places, because it is seperate from the casino and you can drive up and be out of your car and in the book in 30 seconds (STARDUST has this advantage too). SAHARA is just as bad as the downtown books (small TVs, tiny book). I have no opinion about BALLYS, since I haven't been in there in ten years. CAEASARS is CAESARS, but gets more of a tourist crowd. I've actually seen viwers in there watching games and they didn't have any action (horrors! -- kick their asses out of the seats!). I like the RIO, which is cozy, but on weekends you can't get a seat. Also, there ar enot enough TVs in the RIO, considring its a new casino and large enough to handle an expansion. I would not set foot inside NEW YORK/NEW YORK if they were giving away free lobster. It's not a casino, it's a Disney Park.

Mandalay is probably the best book for watching games, IMO. Don't know about best lines because when I am on vacation, I don't shop for lines.

As far as craps odds, I know standard strip odds were 3x 4x 5x last time I was there. That was mainly Mandalay and Luxor. MGM, too I think. Good luck.

Bluegrass!
, but really all the books are exactly the same there!

You've got to be kiddin' right? All the Vegas Sportsbooks are NOT the same. There's no comparison between books such as Tropicana, NY-NY, Luxor to sportsbooks such as Caesars, Mandaly Bay, and the Bellagio with the last being my personal favorite. The Bellagio book is ENORMOUS with tons of reclining leather chairs each with their own personalized television. Bellagio is downright AWESOME!!

MGM/Mirage propertities are dealing a 20 cent baseball line this year.

Change that BEST ODDS to WORST ODDS.

When I stated above that the MGM/Mirage has the "best lines" I was speaking of finding soft numbers that are slow to react to movements and breaking news. Of course, the 20 cent line for MLB is makes this one of the worst places in town for baseball, but I was speaking for ALL sports in general.

Thanks for the write-up Nolan. I really enjoy reading your stuff.

Am considering putting together a scrap-book JUST of your opinion! WOW!

Haven't decided what to entitle it yet. "Things Nolan Said"... too mundane

"Nolan's Thoughts"... a bit better. With the size of the thing anyone would surely know that you are QUITE A Thinker...and.. knowledgable, too.

"Things That GOD Said....About Casino Gambling, Sports Betting and Poker" Ahhhh yes.. I think that's the ticket!

Although I am quite sure that this will come off as me being a total smartass.. I do want you to know that I sincerely value your opinion. AND that I have read many articles by you and consider your opinion and guidance to be what has finally started to point me in the right direction. From being a consistent loser to being an occasional winner! Building a foundation.

I have learned a lot from you.

Thanks!

AzRusty:

Thanks for the very nice compliments.

One motto I have chosen to live my life by is that EVERYONE has something to teach me. Everyone can contribute something in some small way (okay, well maybe not Monica Lewinsky or Tom Green which foreshadow the decline of Western civilization -- but that's another topic for another time).

Sports handicapping is a "fluid" science. It always changes. It's paramenters are never constant. What works today may not work tomorrow. And vice versa. I have found my conversations with others and e-mails exchanges to be an invaluable learning resource. Not only from what people say and do -- but what they DO NOT say and do not do. Not only from the successes, but the failures, as well.

This, along with playing the market, is the most high-pressure (and at times loneliest) profession I can imagine. It's good to have friends and a site like this to exchange words.

Thanks again.

One thing I've noticed about the MadJack forums is the amount of respect that is generally shared among posters. A broad spectrum of attitudes about politics is represented, and sometimes the debates are heated, but debates here are MUCH more civilized than any other forum or chat room I have visited on the web.

As players, we at least have the common bond of the BAD BEAT, the highs and lows, and I think probably a much more realistic perspective of things that the uninitiated.

Many thanks to all the posters who put in so MANY HOURS of their time for free just to help out the poor dumbasses like myself who can't pick his nose, much less winners. Special cudos to Nolan Dalla, a very truthful man.

I know of a tout that descried our endeavor pretty well by saying ( as fellow sports bettors, a certain bond develops even though we are total strangers. It's a special relationship that cannot be experienced by non-gamblers.
