Rampage-Jardine Booked for UFC 96

Rampage-Jardine Booked for UFC 96 Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson will lock horns with Keith Jardine in a showdown pairing two top 10 fighters at UFC 96 on March 7 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The UFC announced the matchup -- which adds some much-needed star power to the show -- on Saturday.

The bout comes as a bit of a surprise since many see Jackson as the No. 1 contender for Rashad Evans? UFC light heavyweight crown.

Affiliated with the Wolfslair Academy, the 30-year-old Jackson (29-7) has posted seven wins in eight fights, a disputed decision loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86 the lone blemish. He knocked out longtime nemesis Wanderlei Silva at UFC 92 in December, launching himself back into title contention. Earlier this month, Jackson pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor charges associated with a high-speed chase that ended in his arrest in July; the plea deal will likely allow him to avoid jail time.

Jardine (14-4-1), based out of Jackson?s Submission Fighting in Albuquerque, N.M., last fought at UFC 89 in October, when he earned a split decision against Brandon Vera. He also holds victories against former UFC light heavyweight champions Griffin and Chuck Liddell. The 33-year-old former bounty hunter staked his claim in the 205-pound division with an unorthodox style and vicious leg and body kicks.

UFC 96 will also feature a bout pairing one-time heavyweight title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga with unbeaten Shane Carwin and a welterweight match pitting Dustin Hazelett against American Top Team?s Ben Saunders.

I have pledged to think long and hard before ever going against a Greg Jackson trained fighter, or a Sityodtong/Dellagrotte trained fighter.

At first glance, it's easy to think Rampage wins this fight by murder... Jardine is used to being on the receiving end of a vicious KO. However, Rampage does have a serious weak spot in his ground game (see Forrest Griffin, round 2), and I think that will be exploited by Jardine.

If Keith can manage to close the distance without eating uppercuts from Rampage, I think Keith can win this fight with ground control. A superior gameplan can go a long way against Rampage, IMO, and Greg Jackson will have Jardine follow a strategy similar to what we saw in his fight against Vera. Take him down and out of his comfort zone.. yada yada yada.

Rampage will be a huge fav, but i'll be on the puppy Jardine. ruff ruff :)

In my opinion, Jardine can win this fight with leg kicks.
Rampage did not like Forrest's leg kicks and Jardine is no slouch in that department.

i doubt that jardine can out-wrestle jackson...and jackson has the real chin....so,i don`t see how jardine wins this?......

jackson won`t cower and give it away like vera did....

btw,who the hell is michael patt?......looks like dana`s trying to resurrect vera....

Jackson's wrestling consists of slams, that's about it. Dan Henderson owned Rampage in the clinch.. slung him around like a piece of pizza dough.

I know Jardine is no Hendo when it comes to wrestling, but Rampage's wrestling is not as good as he makes it out to be IMO. Against Griffin and at some points against Hendo, Rampage looked completely out of it on the ground. Maybe i should say his BJJ sucks, not his wrestling.

Still, i think Rampage can be taken down with ease, and Jardine has underrated grappling.. of course, we dont know if Jardine will go that route, but like weepaul said; Jardine can keep his distance with kicks to the legs and body.

May be completely wrong, but im banking on Jardine being a pretty good underdog so i wont need to risk much to win some sweet $$.

This is quite possibly the worst UFC card that I've seen in YEARS.

Jackson-Jardine are hardly even main event worthy.

This card is so bad it should be free.

I agree... i wanna see Saunders/Hazelett and Miller/Maynard, but i wont buy this card if left unchanged.

I also have a problem with Liddell/Shogun as a main event, considering their weak performances lately... but i can understand that because both guys have their share of loyal fans that wont miss a PPV

i will be shocked if jardine can put rampage on his back like griffin did....

maybe he gets lucky with a head kick...

personally,i think jardine should go back to being a film star...

retarded match making. it seems that jardine is the gateway to evans.

bonnar faces jardine then faces evans

liddell faces jardine then faces evans

griffin faces jardine then faces evans

quinton faces jardine then faces evans?

yea, rampage is sure to face evans assuming he gets past jardine. i dont know why, though..... jardine isnt a top 15 light heavyweight, this fight makes no sense.

why not a rampage/shogun rematch and let liddell rematch jardine?

Muhr i thought the same thing. Why in the world would Rampage even take this risk? I can't even believe that his next fight wasn't for the title. Rampage is a fool for taking this fight. Why take a risk like this?

i think the best fight on the card is Carwin against Gonzaga. Could be a great fight if Gonzaga doesnt puss out and fights like a man.

Go watch his last fight, goofball. :)

He took Vera down and controlled him for the majority of round 1, but didnt do any major damage. Vera took Keith down (i think) in round 2..... the more i think about it, i dont think i can trust Jardine b/c he seems to get rocked or KTFO in every match. He'll have to be a pretty big dog for me to make a play on him.

yea, i watched it again and it wasnt that Jardine did anything special, it was that Vera sucked big-time

Yeah, and i think Weasel has a point about Dana trying to get Vera's career back on top.

there were rumors that Grove would be facing Jason Day on this card (UFC 96), but i guess that didnt work out.

he'll be back soon, there was an article up on mmajunkie.com about him just a week or two ago, citing his eagerness to return. u can search his name under the "fighters" column at mmajunkie for recent news.
