That's exactly what the PGA is - can someone tell me exactly what is "major" about this tournament?

To me, if a professional golfer owns 1 major and it's the PGA, it doesn't really count (see DL III, David Toms, Craig Perks, etc.)

Come see me when you win a real major:sadwave:

Nothing---It's for the most part a pro-am, where the ams have a long shot chance to get paid. In my mind the Matchplay is much more major. I'd increase the field to 128 though. The Dubai thing looks to break into the major catagory too. Especially if a lot of US players play it.

agree that the match play has a more "major" feel than this one, really enjoy that week

that being said, a Harrington v Woods showdown on Sunday would be pretty f'n cool

So should Paul Lawrie, Todd Hamilton and Ben Curtis winning the British Open be thrown out also,
and maybe Steve Jones, Corey Pavin winning the US Open too?

Toto brings up a great point...where exactly do you draw the line? What makes the PGA a "non-major" event for you LA? Was it okay that Lucas Glover won the US Open this year, or Zach Johnson at the Masters a few years ago? Not exactly creme of the crop players and I dare say these tournaments weren't diminished at all by these victories. I think it is ludicrous to say that anyone winning the PGA shouldn't really be allowed to count it as a major. Fact is...all players know it's a major by title, they all converge on the chosen course, the field tees it up for four days and gives it their best, then a champion emerges. There are no asterisks. They earned it.

1st off guys, if you were pro golfers, would you rather a PGA over a Masters, US Open or Open Championship win?

2nd, the Masters has Augusta, the US Open is prob the toughest golf challenge in the world, and The Open Championship oozes history - the PGA was basically just added and called a major - why? Are three not enough?

Just like in tennis, pretty sure I'd take a Wimbledon, French Open or US Open trophy over one from the Aussie Open - but I personally give more props to the Aussie Open than to the PGA

And yes, the field is a good one and the guys def go after it, but how does that differ from Bridgestone last week? Or any of the WGC events for that matter? and a far as past champions and asterisks, maybe I let my hatred for DL III get in the way of rational thought, but I just can't bring myself to consider him a major champion - at the same time I have no problem calling Jones, Lawrie, Curtis, Pavin, et al major champions b/c they have done it on the grandest of stages and have truly earned the moniker

Lastly, let's give it the eye test, or in this case the "juice" test:

What, as a true golf fan, gets your juices flowing more?

The Masters?
The US Open?
The Open Championship?

Or this week? To me it's just an upper-echelon field at a regular tour stop that gets a lot of attention just b/c it is called (incorrectly IMO) a major

want to also add this - if they lengthen and toughen the course a bit from thursday there will def be more of a "major" feel over the weekend

Good points, LA. I agree the PGA doesn't get me as excited as The Masters or US Open. Not even close...but it's still a major and the winners are crowned as such, regardless.

BTW, there's no question the PGA is going to use all, or the majority of, the length that new Hazeltine has in her by Sunday. It's going to be a much greater test than Thursday set-up.

The Mercedes Tournament of Champions
The PGA

There are going to be major changes in pro golf. A world tour is the coming attraction, especially the women. They will see how it works out with the gals, try it with the men eventually, and drop the PGA major deal like a hot rock. I see two tournaments a month, back to back, double purses, and a whole new group of international sponsors. New names, new courses, new sponsors. An example would be "The Donald Trump World Open" 5 million to the winner and a lot to everyone else.

Defintely am a big fan of the Matchplay and players championship over the 'pga championship', but hey its a major and nothing beats major pressure and meltdowns on sundays :142smilie :142smilie
