CARLISLE, Pa., July 25 -- Coach Steve Spurrier's offense lost its swiftest wide receiver when rookie Cliff Russell suffered a season-ending knee injury this morning during the Washington Redskins' fourth practice of training camp.

Russell, a third-round draft selection, suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament and is slated to undergo surgery in the coming weeks. He suffered the injury while running a pass route against cornerback Fred Smoot on a play in which the ball was thrown to another receiver. Russell slipped as he planted his foot on the field at Dickinson College, and he crumpled. He was helped from the field but did not appear to be in extreme discomfort. He told the team's trainers that he felt his knee had shifted, however, and an MRI exam revealed a complete tear.
