Regarding the Potential Cancellations of Sporting Events

I read a short article in the Mpls. Star Tribune this morning regarding the potential cancellation of sporting events. I thought I'd share it here as some "food for thought". http://www.startribune.com/stories/1576/685879.html

I completely understand cancelling yesterdays and todays contests. We, as a nation, need time to mourn our tragic losses. I personally would feel it disrespectful if these contests had not been cancelled.

However, it is not healthy to remain mourning over an extended period of time. As a nation, there needs to be a time where we get on with our lives. For some, that time might begin today. I'd guess most of us need another day or two to vent our anger.

Obviously, those most directly affected (e.g., those who lost loved ones, eyewitnesses ) by the acts of war that were committed yesterday will need more time than others to heal. The rest of us, who have gone through the disbelief stage, and now are angry, will soon need something to get our minds off of this. There is nothing you or I can do right now to "fix" this situation, besides give blood and offer assistance. I don't want to hold the anger within any longer.

I know, that by this weekend, I will need something else to think about. It's still only Wednesday. The country will, for the most part, be back to "business as usual" tomorrow.

I understand that now may not be the best time to bring this up. I realize that there are many here who are more traumatized by the events than I. Believe me, I want justice as bad as any of you. Unfortunately, the deed is done, and no action on our country's part can really provide the "justice" that we seek.

Please forgive me if I sound insensitive. I am still at a loss of words, and I know that I am not the best at communicating what I really feel (I am, after all, male). I just feel the need to bring it to everyone's attention that perhaps sporting events will be just what we need by this weekend, and perhaps right now is not the best time to decide to cancel them.

My two cents.

I agree 200%.. Good post. If we shut down and let these PHUCKERS think they can bring our country to a complete halt then they have already won.. I say lets get back to doing things that makes our Country the greatest in the world. Lets get back to work, lets get back to sports but let us still mourn the injured and dead without putting the entire country on hold.

Agreed also. There is a time to grieve but at some point we will need to move on. The NFL will be making a big mistake if they cancel, giving in to the terrorists. Reportedly, the NFL took a lot of heat when it decided to play 2 days after the Kennedy assassination; it deserved the heat. 2 days was not enough time. IMO, this is different, 5 days is a completely different situation. Unfortunately, I feel the NFL fears backlash from New Yorkers if they play this weekend. The Pac 10 Commish is trying to play God by ordering all D-1 teams not to play. If he decides that for his own conference, fine. But who is he to tell others what to do? I would guess there will be a large number of college games played but we could see a "Domino Effect" if there are several last minute cancellations. Sports would be a good tonic to help take people's minds off the recent tragedy.

PacMan,

I partially agree in that I dont want to see the terrorist totally bring down the country and bring everything to a halt....and yes maybe it is just what WE need....BUT what about the athletes? Is it just what THEY need? Would you want to get on a plane this weekend and fly across country just so we can sit back safe, all nestled in our homes away from the crowded attractions and watch football or baseball?

I think some thought should go to the fact that we have yet to apprehend all of those involved in this country and since so much attention will be focused on the airports, a huge target like a stadium full of innocent people would become likely, I would like to see the others involved in this identified and taken care of. I think it would be better to be cautious than lose one more life to these people, just my 2 cents worth

First, to respond to KotysDad: If I were a professional athlete, I believe I would be willing and wanting to play this weekend. The only way I would change my mind is if another terrorist act happens between now and then. We can't spend our lives in fear, but we should not be reckless either.

In reponse to loungelizard: A stadium full of innocent people would be a good target for terrorism now, or any time. So would the Sears Tower, the Empire State Building, Walt Disney World, and hundreds, if not thousands of other U.S. targets here and abroad. Does this mean we forbid the gathering of say, more than 1,000 (or 10,000, or any number, for that matter) people anywhere at one time? And if so, for how long? Until Osama is dead?

I respect the decision of the NFL. First off, it sounds like the majority of players and coaches did not want to play. I really don't believe that is because they'll get paid anyway, though some cynical folks may wonder about this. Second, I understand that they "consulted the White House" (i imagine this means high-level officials, and not the building itself) before making this decision. If US Intelligence has any reason to believe playing this weekend presents more of a danger to players and fans than waiting one week, then I'm all for cancelling the contests.

I really believe that if the terrorists were intending to wreak more havoc soon, they would done something else already. But, I'm no expert on the matter.
