The Detroit Tigers got to play the lowly Kansas City Royals in their first series back from the All-Star Break, but they won?t find the going as easy this week as they kick off a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Or maybe they will find the going as easy - not much has seemed to be able to slow down the Tigers this season.
And if Chicago wants to stay in the thick of the race for first place in the Central they?re going to need to come up with some wins versus the Tigers this week. The ChiSox struggled with the New York Yankees on the weekend, and are in danger of falling too far behind the Tigers in the Central, and too close to the Yankees in the Wild Card race.
Even though Detroit started the year strongly, it was widely expected to be them, not Chicago, that would be fading in the middle of July. However, the Tigers just won?t go away, and as a result they?re now listed as the +100 favorite to win the 2006 American League Pennant. The White Sox, the defending pennant winners, are pegged at +175.
Two of the contending AL East teams, the Red Sox and the Yankees, are listed at +175 and +250 right now. After those two there?s a fairly big gap, with the Oakland Athletics (+650), Toronto Blue Jays (+750), and Los Angeles Angels (+1000) next on the chart. Here are the current posted odds for all 14 American League teams to win the pennant:
Odds to Win American League Pennant
Detroit Tigers --- +100
Boston Red Sox --- +175
Chicago White Sox --- +175
New York Yankees --- +250
Oakland Athletics --- +650
Toronto Blue Jays --- +750
Los Angeles Angels --- +1000
Minnesota Twins --- +1500
Texas Rangers --- +1500
Seattle Mariners --- +2000
Cleveland Indians --- +5000
Baltimore Orioles --- +8000
Tampa Bay Devil Rays --- +10000
Kansas City Royals --- +20000
Over in the National League, the New York Mets are still the team everyone is talking about. However, the St. Louis Cardinals seem to be rebounding, and are creeping up to the Mets? level in the winning percentage column. Oddsmakers have the Mets listed as -125 favorites to win the 2006 National League Pennant, with the Cards sitting at +250.
From there it gets trickier. The Houston Astros, who haven?t exactly lit the league on fire since getting Roger Clemens back in their rotation, are sitting at +550, the same odds given to the leaders of the NL West, the San Diego Padres. The Cincinnati Reds, who made a questionable trade with the Washington Nationals last week, are nevertheless listed next at +700 (note as well that the Reds are still above the Astros in the Central).
The Atlanta Braves are near the bottom of the list at +1600 odds to win the National League Pennant, but strong play of late has put them back into contention for a Wild Card berth; which is probably the last thing the other top NL teams want to see happen. Here are the current posted odds for all 16 National League teams to win the pennant:
Odds to Win National League Pennant
New York Mets --- -125
St Louis Cardinals --- +250
Houston Astros --- +550
San Diego Padres --- +550
Cincinnati Reds --- +700
Los Angeles Dodgers --- +750
Milwaukee Brewers --- +1000
Florida Marlins --- +1300
Philadelphia Phillies --- +1500
San Francisco Giants --- +1500
Arizona Diamondbacks --- +1600
Atlanta Braves --- +1600
Colorado Rockies --- +2000
Chicago Cubs --- +3000
Washington Nationals --- +7500
Pittsburgh Pirates --- +15000
Watch for all of these odds to move around over the next two weeks as teams wheel and deal in advance of the trade deadline. Acquiring someone like Alfonso Soriano can do wonders for a team?s chances, especially if they?re locked into a tight division or Wild Card race. Both western divisions are still waiting for one club to step up and take over.
