Can't believe they are going to play this. Rain/snow mix, 33 degrees at 2:00 then lower--12 mph wind blowing in --feels like 21. Bats are going to sting.

Thx for the info Hawkeye. I'm not a big bases player, but under 10 seems pretty appealing based on your report. I know that Rockies at home generally = over, but what you described makes me think 10 runs would be quite a challenge.

Usually have a rule thumb-never bet an under for a Rockies games at home unless the total is at least 11

delay..one pitcher loves the cold the other hates it.

nobody could have known this

in reading this Marques was up and down and freezing cold by the time he took the mound...just a real bad break with the delay combined with a country hurler and a sunshine thrower

11:04 a.m. MT ? The snow is starting to stick on the grass at Coors Field. Some Rockies players are still throwing and warming up, despite the conditions.

11:19 a.m. MT ? Groundskeepers with snow blowers are working to blow the snow and ice off the portion of the field near the dugouts. Snow still coming down at a good clip.

11:33 a.m. MT ? An update on the temps?

11:45 a.m. MT ? As a note, there has not been anything officially announced from the Rockies regarding a delay or cancellation. At this moment, the game is still scheduled to begin at 2:10 p.m. (Denver time). When we get any official word, we will post here. Please keep refreshing for the latest information.

12:05 p.m. MT ? Groundskeepers are now using portable heaters to try to melt the snow and ice off the tarp. Tractors are also scraping the ice and snow off the outfield grass. There?s no question they are working to keep the field ready to play.

12:20 p.m. MT ? The gates are officially open at Coors Field and people are coming in. Snow is still coming down and the tarp is still on the field as preparations continue.

12:38 p.m. MT ? Crews have dumped the ice and snow off the tarp but it is back on the infield now. Skies are lighter but snow is still coming down.

12:58 p.m. MT ? We are officially in a delay. More details to come but the game will not start at 2:10 p.m. as scheduled.

1:20 p.m. MT ? There are actually fans sitting in their seats. Tarp is on the field and Opening Day festivities have been delayed as well as the start of the actual game ? but hey, they?re ready to watch something!

1:41 p.m. MT ? The tarp has been shifted to just cover the infield so the grounds crew can work on as much of the grass as possible.

1:49 p.m. MT ? No activity on the field at the moment. Large deposit of snow and ice is visible in the left field tunnel.

2:08 p.m. MT ? Game time has now been set for 3:10 p.m. MT. Tarp is coming off the field.

DENVER (AP) While his teammates shivered and the mercury plummeted, Brandon McCarthy embraced Colorado's wintry weather.

''Yeah, it felt like high school baseball. I don't mind pitching in cold. I got used to it growing up,'' McCarthy said. ''It's been a while since I've been back in it. It's much easier for the pitcher than the hitter, so keep that in mind and get loose.''

McCarthy tossed six solid innings and delivered a two-run double that chased German Marquez in the fifth inning of the Atlanta Braves' 8-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on a frigid Friday that marked the second-coldest game in Coors Field history.

''The cold, it's not something I'm scared of, it's something I almost get excited for,'' said McCarthy, who attended Cheyenne Mountain High School an hour south of Denver in Colorado Springs. ''In the cold, it's just something I know it sucks for hitters. And once I get loose it really isn't that big of a deal for pitchers.''

It was 27 degrees when the Rockies' home opener began after an hour-long delay caused by sleet and snow. That was just 4 degrees warmer than when these teams met in Denver on April 23, 2013, in the coldest first-pitch temperature in major league history.

The Braves won that one, 4-3.

McCarthy (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits, more than enough for the hot-hitting Braves, who lead the majors with a whopping 8-run average so far.

''Everybody's doing their part,'' McCarthy said. ''Pinch-hitters are coming in doing it, pitchers have been hitting, the offense has been consistent.''

No so the Rockies.

Marquez (0-1) following up a spectacular first start at Arizona by giving up seven runs, seven hits and six walks in just 4 2/3 innings.''It was a little tough because I didn't have my grip at all,'' said Marquez, a 23-year-old Venezuelan who, unlike McCarthy, took the mound without long sleeves and never got a good feel for his pitches because of the finger-numbing cold.

Marquez allowed a solo homer to Ozzie Albies in the first and walked two batters before Preston Tucker's sacrifice fly and Dansby Swanson's two-run triple made it 4-0.

and nobody told sunshine boy to put on long sleeves..
