Accoording to ESNP RADIO he is in surgery at this time....

He flew off his Harley Bike and slammed the widshield of a car, not wearing a helmet.

And ESPN said that it was this time last year that Bill Cowher had a talk with Big Ben and told Big Ben he wants him to wear a helmut.
Big Ben didn't heed Coach Cowher's advice.

Rumor here is a pretty somber one. The guy has been warned from plenty of people, especially when he is on top of the world. Why? It is also not like Pittsburgh is the most condusive place to ride a bike.

The latest and not yet confirmed, 9-inch laceration on the back of his head, broken jaw, and 2 badly bruised knees. Stay tuned.

This is what I have on the situation. This is unconfirmed, but from someone with ties to the hospital and the scene.:

He was riding his cycle down 2nd Avenue, by the 10th Street Bridge. A lady driving a Chrysler New Yorker turned into him, likely without seeing him or being able to react until it was too late. Anyway, she was making a left turn, and he must have come screaming down Second Ave. (along the river, not much traffic at 10:30 in the morning), she didn't see him come down, and he t-boned her left-front quarterpanel. He goes over the handlebars, head into the windshield, bike goes flying, and so does he.

A witness who was staying with him waiting for the cops said he didn't know what city he was in. Cops get there, he tries to stand up, and then falls down in a heap again.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition Monday afternoon, Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital said before surgery.

The player's agent, Leigh Steinberg, described the injuries to The Associated Press and said he did not know if there was further damage.

"He was talking to me before he left for the operating room," Jones said. "He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened. He knows where he is. From that standpoint, he's very stable."

Steelers president Art Rooney said the team was "encouraged by the early reports from the medical team" at the hospital. "I am sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery."

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger was without a helmet, police said. He has said he likes to ride without one, a habit that once prompted a lecture from Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher.

Roethlisberger was between radio interviews and on his black 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa - large, racing-style bike - and heading toward an intersection on the edge of downtown. A silver Chrysler New Yorker traveling in the opposite direction took a left turn and collided with the motorcycle, and Roethlisberger was thrown, police said.

The other car was driven by a 62-year-old woman, police said. They didn't immediately release her name and no charges were filed.

Witness Sandra Ford was waiting at a bus stop when she said she saw the motorcycle approach. Seconds later, she said she heard a crash, saw the motorcyclist in the air and ran toward the crash scene.

"He wasn't moving and I was afraid that he had died. ... He wasn't really speaking. He seemed dazed but he was resisting the effort to make him stay down," said Ford, who didn't realize the motorcyclist was Roethlisberger.

Police spokesman Lt. Kevin Kraus said police and homicide units were leading the investigation, a standard practice when there is an accident with critical injuries.

In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl title in February at age 23. Training camp for next season begins at the end of July.

Several teammates, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch, linebacker Joey Porter and safety Mike Logan, arrived at the hospital emergency room but did not comment.

Some fans also gathered at the hospital, including Juanita Clark, who sells Steelers paraphernalia.

"I just feel like he's a family member," said her daughter, Loretta Clark.

Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's state law requiring helmets to be worn was repealed in September 2003.

In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.

"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.

Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

I edited my earlier post due to Regular Joe's post. No need to comment on broken bones if they can't be confirmed.

I wonder if the 62 year old woman in the New Yorker had a cell phone to her ear at the time of the crash. I wouldnt doubt it.

Terry Bradshaw had commented about Roshliberger riding a cycle saying hey wait until you retire and ride that thing.

Pre season right around the corner.

Crowd expresses concern, then shock, when Ben identified
Monday, June 12, 2006

By Michael A. Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

As in most serious motor vehicle accidents, the curious gathered late this morning at Second Avenue and the 10th Street Bridge, surveying the aftermath of a motorcycle-car crash.

They saw the smashed front end of the motorcycle with pieces strewn about. They noted the 6-inch hole in the car's windshield where the motorcyclist's head impacted. They blanched at the blood pool where the motorcyclist's head struck the pavement after flying over the car. A red hooded sweatshirt was nearby. They expressed sadness for the accident victim.

And then, the word spread throughout the crowd of 15 or so people that the injured motorcyclist wasn't some anonymous person but was Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. For the most part, those who were there early on learned that from reporters and photographers who had rushed to the scene after hearing his name broadcast on the police scanner.

"You're kidding me? That was Roethlisberger?" one motorist who saw the aftermath of the accident said to a reporter.

One woman, who saw the accident and rushed to Roethlisberger's aid, likewise was shocked when told it was Roethlisberger.

"That was him? Oh, my! He did say his name was 'Ben,' she said, recalling that the injured man didn't know where he was but knew his name.

"That wasn't him," a man with her argued. For one thing, he didn't appear tall enough, the man said.

But about 15 minutes later, David Lockett, the Steelers spokesman who rushed to the scene and conferred with police officers, confirmed for the media the victim was indeed Roethlisberger.

"He asked where he was at," the eyewitness recalled. "He didn't know what city he was in. He kept trying to get up. I told him to just lie down," the witness said.

Most of the earlier crowd departed but was replaced by about 30 onlookers who came to the scene after hearing about Roethlisberger's accident, hoping his injuries weren't serious, even as they bemoaned his decision not to wear a helmet.

Not far away, firefighters used a firehose to wash away the blood.

I am sorry to hear this and I hope Big Ben is OK and has a complete recovery, but everytime I hear about a M/C accident, I can't help but think of the old Cheech and Chong tape, "Brave Motorcycle Rider" or a former co-worker of mine that did a Indian type scalping practice on his dome by sliding down the pavement with no helmet on. Or even worse the accident the knocked my wife out of being an EMT. It was ugly, so I won't go there here. Yep my brother used to own a Yamaha 600 (memory poor on this one it was in the 70's) and he sold it. TOO many people that don't watch out for Bikes he said. The most frequent unavoidable M/C wreck is the Venison vs Bike event. The deer often does not survive but the rider/rider's never fair very well either.

No matter how safe or experienced rider one is, you can never account for the ignorance and stupidity of other drivers.
I'm not blaming anyone as details are still cloudy, but a 62 year old woman in a Chrysler New Yorker doesn't sound like any road travelers best friend. :nono:
