Former tennis star Roscoe Tanner gets probation, must repay $102,000
Largo, Fla. -- Former tennis star Roscoe Tanner was sentenced to 10 years' probation and ordered to repay a boat seller more than $102,000 in restitution and interest after being found guilty of grand theft and writing a worthless check.
Tanner, 52, had spent more than 100 days behind bars, unable to post bail or hire a lawyer after being arrested for bouncing a $35,595 check in a 32-foot pleasure boat purchase in 2000. He pleaded no contest Wednesday.
Tanner, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., remained in jail Thursday, held without bail and awaiting extradition to New Jersey, where he faces charges he failed to pay more than $82,000 in child support to another woman.
Known for his overpowering serve, Tanner won the 1977 Australian Open, lost in the 1979 Wimbledon final and was among the world's top 10 tennis players between 1970 and 1980.
