Rosenfels gets QB honor for Spurrier's first game

July 30, 2002

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) -- No one would have blamed Steve Spurrier for giving Sage Rosenfels the brush-off. Instead, the second-year-man will be the Redskins' starting quarterback for their first exhibition game.

Rosenfels has never been in an NFL game. He is a holdover from the previous regime, a fourth-round draft pick whose arm-strength and mobility are nothing exceptional, who relies more on intelligence and poise when leading a team downfield.

Yet Spurrier has made him part of the Washington Redskins' three-way quarterback race. Now the unassuming ex-Iowa State player with the boyish face will have the honor of starting Spurrier's first exhibition game, the American Bowl against San Francisco on Sunday morning (Saturday night EDT) in Osaka, Japan.

``It's exciting,'' Rosenfels said. ``It'll be my first action playing with the first-string in a preseason game. It'll be fun.''

Spurrier said he's letting Rosenfels go first because he's the only incumbent from last year's team, even though Rosenfels sat on the bench the whole year.

Realistically, Rosenfels is playing catch-up. Wuerffel and Matthews both played for Spurrier at the University of Florida and are thus more familiar with the Redskins' new offensive system.

``He's picked it up fairly well,'' Spurrier said of Rosenfels. ``I don't think Sage has been in a pass-oriented offense before this, so it's a lot for him.''

Rosenfels threw well on the first day of training camp last week, but it's been downhill from there. After a slow start, the quarterback battle has begun to define itself clearly: Matthews is emerging as the clear leader and the only one who looks ready to be an NFL starter, while Wuerffel has been consistent but not spectacular.

As for Rosenfels, he had another tough day Tuesday. His lobbed interception over the middle, intended for Jacquez Green but picked off by Mark Washington, might have been his worst throw of camp.

But the real test will be the exhibition games, so Rosenfels has a chance to make up ground in Japan. It shouldn't be hard to get motivated because this starting battle is different from most: One will be the starter, one will be the backup, and the other won't even make the team.

``It's completely different from anything thing I've ever been in quarterback-wise,'' Rosenfels said.

``I think I'm a pretty smart quarterback, and you have to be smart and tough and heady in his offense. I'm not quite as comfortable as the other two guys, but I'm getting there. I can go out there and play and try to win.''

There's no reason for him to be the starter. I think that Spurrier is just looking at matching up his better quarterbacks against the weaker opposition to get some buzz with a preseason win.

Bobby - Can't agree with you less here. Spurrier has a reason. He is starting Rosenfels because the guy put in his time last year and deserves a shot. He went through the two a days and is a respected member of the team.

So first off, Spurrier gets the respect of the veteran players on the team. These veteran players have to be on your side. Spurrier has to win their hearts and I believe that he will. But Rome was not built in one day my friend. First we have
pre-season.

If Rosenfels plays well and they win, maybe Spurrier has found his quarterback. If the guy falls on his ass then he gave him the first shot and it didnt work out. I would play Rosenfels the whole game. If the worst happens then he looks to Matthews and crosses his fingers.

For Spurrier to come into a new program, from the college ranks and to have a very demanding win now type of owner, is a very difficult proposition. Many coachs from the college ranks have failed. Spurrier is not going to be one of them. He will surprise us all with what he does with this Washington team.

Your reading it wrong is all Bobby. I dont mean no harm. Its just that in gambling when you read things wrong it costs someone money.

S-A,

The problems that I have with your reasoning is that
  • You don't gain respect by spending a year on the scout team (not even getting the "honor" of carrying the clipboard)
  • If Spurrier cares about how his players feel about him, it will be the first time

He's already come into this league questioning the effectiveness of Haslett's work ethic and Dungy's big game philospophy and has not questioned them behind closed doors, but with a mike in his face.

I do agree with you on one thing, my above analysis might be wrong. By stating that Rosenfels gets the first half and Wuerfel the second, he might be taking this game as a preseason game no matter what he said earlier about wanting to win. If Matthews, who every observer I have read says is the only one that has a grasp of this offense, is not intending to get any snaps, then I question whether Spurrier is playing this game to win. That will be the information I will be most interested in before Saturday.

WTEM reports that while Washington Redskins QB Sage Rosenfels will start the game against the 49ers this Saturday and QB Danny Wuerffel will finish it, QB Shane Matthews may not get to play at all. It appears HC Steve Spurrier is saving Matthews so that he can play the entire game against the Panthers. Meanwhile, the team and first-round draft pick QB Patrick Ramsey remain deadlocked in contract negotiations. Ramsey and recently signed DT Drayl Gardener are among the eight Redskins not making the trip to Osaka, Japan.
