Not much news from the Russian camp; Romantsev was saying all the right things about Tunisia to members of the Russian media, feigning righteous indignation at media types who are dismissing Tunisia out of hand before the first game starts. My guess is he is not so much in awe of Tunisia as he is concerned at the rather poor form of his squad in the last 4-5 matches (France friendly excluded, of course), and realizes with this team it is best not to take ANYONE lightly.

Speculation is that Romantsev will abandon the "lone striker" 4-5-1 he has favored in the past and will start both Beschastnikh and Sychev up front against Tunisia. Still no definitive word on Mostovoi; he appears healthy enough to play, but my guess is that Romantsev will keep him on the bench for Tunisia.

Finally, an interesting piece of news that the Russian media has been reporting with obvious glee- the head of the Russian soccer federation, Vyacheslav Koloskov, has apparently lobbied successfully against the English referee Graham Poll, who was scheduled to work the JPN-RUS game. Apparently he will be replaced in that match by the German, Markus Merk. Fans of the Russian team wil remember Poll as the referee who awarded Slovenia a late game penalty in the qualifying group for contact which (after viewing the clip at least 20 times, I still can't see; it was a horrid call and it proved to be the game winner, of course. Needless to say, Poll is not well-liked by members of the Russian squad and/or the Russian Football Union.

The Russian team has probably two players that will be the key to their success and that have that "star" quality about them; GK Ruslan Nigmatullin and AM Marat Ismailov.

Nigma is generally regarded as the best keeper to prowl the posts for Russia or any former Soviet Union country since the legendary Lev Yashin. After making a name for himself with Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier division, he this year moved to Verona in Serie A, but will not leave the club due to the relegation of the team. He often stated he was kind of using Verona as a stepping stone to one of the bigger Italian clubs (or possibly Spain, as well), but was frustrated by the lack of success by the club as well as lack of playing time. As with many others, he will be looking to parlay a good WC performance into a ticket to one of the Italian or Spanish big boys.

Izmailov plays for Lokomotiv Moscow, but it is universally acknowledged that he won't be there much longer, as a number of European clubs have been linked with him (Newcastle last year was reportedly interested, but Marat has said that England is his 3rd choice destination behind Italy and Spain). The 19 year old is a very skilled playmaker with a deft scoring touch as well, and was the easy MVP of last year's Russian Premier Division (so was Nigma, depending on which poll/paper you read), even as his coach feels he is playing only at 70% of his potential. I think that Marat will be the breakout player for Russia, provided he is given the opportunity in the crowded Russian mid-field, and with the speed problems of the Russian back line and some of the elder statesman of the Russian midfield (Karpin, Mostovoi), he will have to carry a lot of the load for the team to succeed.
