SACRAMENTO STATE FORCED TO CANCEL MEN?S BASKETBALL GAME AT CAL POLY
Release Date: 1/15/2002
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--The scheduled Sacramento State men?s basketball game at Cal Poly on Wednesday, Jan. 16, has been cancelled, it was announced today. The Hornets were forced to make the decision following a Monday ruling by the Big Sky Conference that their schedule exceeded the maximum games allowed under NCAA rules.
Sacramento State petitioned the NCAA for a one-time waiver but had not received a ruling as of 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
Due to the fact that the NCAA had not made a decision, the two schools agreed to cancel the contest to allow Cal Poly the time it needs to alert its fans and those associated with the scheduled game.
?We are disappointed that we will not have the opportunity to play against Cal Poly,? Sacramento State Athletics Director Debby Colberg said. ?Having only been alerted on Monday, we did everything within our power to gain a final ruling from the NCAA. Unfortunately, the time for decision making had come and passed.?
The conflict is based on the Hornets? participation the Guardians Classic, Nov. 13-14, in Memphis, Tenn. The tournament, listed on the NCAA web site as a certified event is considered, according to the site, a ?certified exempted contest as approved by the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet.?
As of Tuesday, Jan. 15, the web site stated that, ?Institutions may exclude these contests from their maximum number of contests allowed under Bylaw 17.?
The NCAA has stated the web site should not have listed men?s and women?s basketball tournaments under this section and are planning on correcting the site in the near future.
