My 7 year old girl has two abscessed teeth. I've had a hard time finding a dentist to pull them. The first dentist we went to was just for a cleaning and that's when he found them but said he couldn't take care of them. We eventually found another dentist that will. He said it will be 1600 to have them taken out. I think part of the reason it's 1600 is because we have to have an anesthesiologist. Does 1600 sound right for taking two abscessed teeth out.

It's not 1600, it's 1475. He told us that we need IV sedation because it can be very tramatic for a young child to have this done.

The high price is due to the anesthesiologist having to run an IV line-

You probably could find someone in the area who does "oral sedation"...meds will be given by mouth vs IV. The pediatric dentist can do that, so the fee will be more like 300-400$ for the sedation part vs probably a grand for the anesthesiologist-

I'm not sure what your insurance situation is like but I have a friend in Dallas who is a pediatric dentist. They do oral conscious sedation there and it would be cheaper than the IV-

How anxious is your daughter? 7 is an age that we usually can work them through it with a little nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and some TLC. Has your daughter had previous bad experiences at the dentist?

Feel free to get my email from Jack and I can give you their office info...insurance, etc-

Saint, the price he quoted me for oral sedation was 1064. We don't have dental "insurance", it's some kind of discount program.(it sucks but it's free from my wife's company).

My little girl hasn't had any bad experiences but the denstist told us it can be tramatic for a kid that age so that's why he recommended the iv sedation.

They have her on Amoxicillin right now, I guess to clear up the infection(?).

Question-do the teeth typically have to be removed in this situation?

Yes, once abscessed removal is best.

He's recommending sedation because there is bigger profit. Any pediatric dentist worth their salt can extract 2 teeth on a 7 year old under nitrous unless they have had a bad experience in the past and will be a difficult behavior. In fact, when they are abscessed the bone is destroyed and they are that much easier.

I personally, for a child who is cooperative, at least give it a shot under nitrous with lots of patience and TLC. What's the worst case scenario? If she has a hard time then you don't push it and go with the sedation. More times than not the teeth are out and the child doesn't even know it, and you save mom and dad a lot of money.

Their fee for sedation is still high. In the office I previously worked in (which can be considered 'high end') extraction of 2 teeth under oral sedation would run about 700$. And we weren't cheap-

Check out http://www.debraduffydds.com/. My friend is the associate there (Laura Carter). Cute girl and great pediatric dentist. She'll take good care of your daughter if you go there.

At the very least I would get a 2nd opinion.

Saint, this was our second opinion.(well kind of) The first dentist wounldn't do it so he recommended for us to go to a specialist. So we went to the guy that cost the amounts I told you about. I don't want to go to a third one though because I'm tired of paying the 150ish for an opinion. That alone will get expensive.
